So, what do you do when you get the goodbyes by the church? Hope for a quick dead? Homage to F12? Gifts to the papa controller? Or simply brace for the worst?

What do you do?

Pray for my ruler's death in a way that is simultaneously convincing of his successor's purity and will keep the realm stable.

My current King is excommunicated at the age of 45. He's also heretical, and reputation was already "worse than dishonourable scum" before these two traits came along. I'm certainly not going to use cheats to kill him, so it's going to be interesting times for the next decade or two.

Well, once I loaded up as the PC after a while (stable times) and revoked my excom because it made no durn sense; the king of Sweden, my ally and friend, had excommed me because he could  I didn't see anything wrong with fixing that.

"Hey dude, hey dude, look!!"
"...what?"
"Check this out, if I do... this, I can Exc-Oh..."
"...what?"
"Er...dude, sorry, I accidentally excommunicated you!"
"So? You are the pope controller, you can des-co me just as easily!"
"Er...no, I would look like an idiot if I did that... Er, sorry dude, Im sure you'll manage... Check ya later!"
"...what!!!!?"

Yeah, has happened to me, except it was a vassal who did it. I made sure to wipe his whole dinasty with assasins before being assasinated myself.

I go to war with somebody hope my ruler is in command of a small unit of men and hope he gets killed in combat.

Can't you just assassinate your ruler?

Not directly (not without the cheat at least).

That said, you can put in a really bad Spymaster and go on an assassination spree and wait for the retaliations.

My survival strategy includes:

* try to raise my own piety (...heck, maybe I will become the next PC, problem solved)
* wait for a random event that will remove the excom
* get an excellent chancellor
* appoint sons and daughters to key court positions. they get a loyalty bonus and so do their spouses
* reduce BB as much as possible.
* go on crusade. this either raises piety (see above), removes the excom by event or gets me killed... win win win all around.
