Hello,

i played a few 1914 campaigns recently in different mods and noticed some annoying ai behavior in all of them. Maybe some things i will mention are intentional, i know how to mod but i am not an expert when it comes to ai modding/behavior.

Most majors:

Why are so many nations not building division, not even 1 line of infantry or something? I had to manually set up some building programms especially for Entente countries as i was playing as Germany. I guess you have to set up the ai files to have them build that but i dont understand the intention behind this "no building" thing. Makes the game too easy sometimes. There is no need for building another 50 divisions in each major but maybe a little something.

Russia:

The russian ai tends to concentrate its forces in 1 or 2, sometimes 3 points and leave other provinces with almost nothing or empty. I was wondering why that is happening and thought maybe its because i encircled too many russian forces in Poland already. Then i gave them some infantry lines to build at scenario start but the outcome was the same. After a while i found out why (and this especially happens in every mod i played so far): Russian ai parks many divisions, sometimes up to 80 or maybe even 100 in Vladivostok for no reason. If i change their location in the savegame to Europe it will deploy some others back to Vladivostok.

Austria-Hungary:

This is a special case because i dont know if the AH ai is meant to be so bad sometimes. AH isnt moving spare forces to the front and uses them for anti partisan duty in Serbia instead. This makes it very easy for Russia to smash them in galicia. The effect is good for a while because it emulates the bad performance of AH forces on the galicia front but the problem is: The ai will always do it but in reality the army would learn trough pain about these mistakes. In short: AI controlled AH will suck even affter 10 years of war experience. After the russian defeat AH will not even deploy all its forces on the italian (and balkan front if Greece is in Entente) and instead enjoys the adventures of anti partisan duty with many divisions.

Italy:

It guards its beaches against a non existant threat and is too passive in the alps. The AH navy is not strong enough against Entente forces to do anything serious.

On a sidenote:

Overall the 1914 scenario is very underdeveloped. There could be so much more events for different alliance outcomes and so on (Sweden in CP for example) and the peace events are rather lacking. There were so many different peace options that could have happened IRL but in game there are no options for a general white peace or such things. But i know, changing this to a satisfying level would require dozens of events at a minimum so i cant blame anyone.

So far i tweaked my grand campaign events for a bit more options but there is so much more to be done.

I have noticed these things too. My suspicion is that the AI is geared for a WW2 scenario and not a WW1 Scenario. Have you noticed how France hardly ever launches an attack against Germany? This I believe is the same problem, Frances AI is focused on the defence a WW2 French trait whereas in WW1 France was very aggressive. I have considered looking into AI characteristics but have never got around to it yet. If a solution can be found to make WW1 AI behaviour it may be necessary to create an event post WW1 to reintroduce WW2 behaviour otherwise the AI will fumble that as well. And yes 80 divisions in Vladivostok is annoying!
I might start to look into AI files to find the solution so if you want to share info at any point just let me know.

About UK i dont know, they sometimes send forces to France and sometimes they send big stacks to Africa in order to hunt some rebel or so. Maybe they need to focus more on Europe. France and AH should be more agressive and Russia should use its forces instead of parking them in the far east.

Regarding events there is much to be done:

If you defend Alsace and focus on Russia first there is no event for Romania that handles such a situation, they would not join the Entente when Ah is far stronger without the losses of the Brusilov offensive.

Sweden could possibly claim Finland in such a case and join the CP.

Greece only got a low chance to join the CP or stay neutral and they still joined the Entente when i beat Russia first. In no way would they have done that IRL, how would they have broken through the Bulgarian lines with AH that could concentrate all forces to Italy and the Balkan.

If Germany manages to break through the French lines but Bulgaria and/or AH lose on their fronts there should be some kind of white peace / peace conference or however you want to call this.

One last thing i want to mention is manpower: France and UK were dry in 1917 and could not have done much without the americans in 1918. In the game it feels like they dont run out of manpower fast enough but i cant confirm it with numbers. Just a feeling so far.

Overall WW1 could be so much more interesting, there was much more to it than currently available mods can offer. No offense, i still like to play some of them :D
