Anschluss question

Playing my first CORE game as Germany, the aschluss event chain has led into Austria becoming my puppet instead of being annexed (it is now june 38). I guess because of some ahistorical choices of the AI as I think I picked the historical options.

I was wondering if I'll still have some chance of annexing them through events at some point or do I have to start doing something drastic to get them before Munich and Danzig and so forth?

There is a low % (I forget exactly - say 5% or 10%) chance that Austria will offer an Alliance instead of being absorbed by the Anschluss. Obviously happened to you, it would seem. That is pretty much it for you, as it were - you won't get them through another means, unless they suffer a fascist coup, when they will probably join Germany (I am referring to the event driven coup, by the way).

Once the March 1938 timeframe has gone, there are no later events to allow Germany to absorb Austria via Anschluss.

Ok, thanks for the info.

My glorious alliance with Austria lasted just a few months and then they started demanding areas in Czechoslovakia and I declined leading them to leave the alliance. Next I couldn't annex the Czechs either. Slovakia was formed and I got the cores but Czechia remained with Sudetenland and all. I then attacked both Austria and the Czechs leading to an early war.

Could the Reichsparteitag events have something to do with all this? I picked the peace option in some of them.

That could be part of it and that you happened to end up with an alliance rather than Anschluss. I also like that you saw Austria demand Tabor (I think it is) and that they left the alliance because you declined it. I haven't seen that part of the event chain reported before.

That would be why then - for a "historic" game, always pick the first option in event choices. Historically, Germany went with Ehre, Arbeit & Grossdeutschland, (IIRC, those are the names of the choices) never choosing Friedens in any of 1936/37/38. The 1939 Reichsparteitag was cancelled.. due to a small little thing called World War 2.. lol.

OK thanks, I'll know not to make that mistake again. It didn't even occur to me at the time that such seemingly minor events would have any impact on the big picture. Just seemed like a free minus to belligerence :rofl:

Exactly, which is why we point out in the manual that things are very much more interconnected in CORE than in vanilla. The quick road is not always the best one.
