I was wondering...right now the event that creates a CoT in Amsterdam is triggered only if the Netherlands don't own Flandres. But Flandres is usually joined with the rest of the lowlands through that Dutch Independence event, so Amsterdam doesn't receive a CoT unless someone subsequently conquers Flandres from the Netherlands. Assuming the Netherlands are played by a human...well that just isn't too likely.

I don't know how it went historically. Did Flandres remain in Spanish hands? Is that why the trade moved to Amsterdam? Or was Antwerp just pillaged?

The idea behind EEP is that if things 'go right' then the game more or less resembles history. But it's different in this case.

So maybe either remove Flandres from the "Dutch Independence" list so that it doesn't join automatically, like Brabant for instance (if Flandres wasn't part of the independent Netherlands) or remove the trigger for the Amsterdam CoT (ie it gets created even if you own Flandres, and in the event text you get an explanation why the CoT down there got closed).

It's a small thing and probably useless anyway, with the merger and all that, but oh well.

The pacification of Ghent that was the compromise ending of the first (or second depending on how you count) stage of the revolt happened in 1576. This happened because the Spanish lost control of their military due to mutinies and had to compromise. The major effort of the mutineers was to plunder Antwerp rather nastily ("the Spanish fury"). Shortly after the pacification of Ghent Antwerp was back in the hands of Calvinists.

The Union of Utrecht which basically founded the United Provinces was in 1579. Antwerp (along with Flanders and Brabant) was basically part of the Netherlands until it fell to the Duke of Parma in 1585.

Due to the sack, and then the fall of Flanders much of the merchant community moved to Amsterdam. Antwerp was further choked by the fact that after it's fall, and until Belgian independence the Dutch prevent any trade from passing to Antwerp from the Sea. (Under Napoleon there was trade but still). This ensured that trade would not return to Antwerp.
