  • Install patch 1.2!
  • Get Windows Vista Service Pack 1
  • Make sure you have the latest directx 9.0c. DX10 on Vista does not fully support it. It is available with the CD install, but people downloading the game from gamersgate can getch it here: http://www.europa-universalis.com/forum/showthread.php?t=349424
  • Make sure you have the latest graphics drivers, either from ATI/nvidias websites, or from your laptop maker if it requires special drivers. Windows update doesn't always get you the latest versions.
    ATI: http://ati.amd.com/support/driver.html
NVidia: http://www.nvidia.com/Download/index.aspx (select manually, the automatic option does not always work).
  • For people with problems running intel graphics cards, see this post for instructions:
    http://forum.paradoxplaza.com/forum/showpost.php?p=8310038&postcount=103
  • In Vista, run the game as administrator.
  • If you are still experiencing problems on Vista, running the game in XP compability mode has been documented to work for a few people. Having up to date drivers is also extra important on Vista.
Check this link the learn how to set compatibility mode.
  • If you have problem finding the latest driver for your machine, try these checking out this site: http://www.omegadrivers.net/
Some customers have solved their problems using drivers from here.
  • There is a rare but known crash on certain nvidia hardware + Vista that occurs when selecting scenariobookmark. We are working in finding a proper workaround but in the meantime it has been documented to work if playing in windowed mode. To do this, go to settings.txt and and find the line fullScreen=yes and change it to fullScreen=no.
  • Some people are reporting freezes in Vista with nvidia cards. A reported workaround is to disable multisamping in settings.txt. (change the multisampling line to say "multisampling=0")

Your game still does'nt work? Make a post in this subforum, make sure you say where your game crashes and include your dxdiag.txt

Hi - I've tried all your suggestions. My game crashes right at startup, "The applications has requested the Runtime to terminate it in an unusual way".

I don't have a dxdiag.txt on my hard drive though?

You must first create dxdiag.txt:

(On XP) Press Start -> Run -> type dxdiag -> press enter.

DirectX Diagnostic tool opens up. Fom DirectX Files -tab press "Save all information" Now it will create an dxdiag.txt.

updated with a solution for freezes in vista (turn off multisampling)
