For my part AoW3 was kind of a let down so I'd be pleased to see a 4th installment. Maybe this time we can get draconians that don't look like autistic land before time dinosaurs.

I think AoW3 had high quality (nice interface, nice graphic, no bugs ). But the design decision with the classes in exchange for less magic was terrible.

Apparently the overlord franchise has been bought out so it can’t be that

So much is true that it can't be a "pure" Overlord sequal but it can be a spiritual successor with a new setting, name and so on.

Classes were one of the best design decisions ever for any sequel. Which doesn't mean there would be no room for improvement. Still, I'd like something original for the new game, that is, nothing with a number at the end

Hmm, I really should try out AoW3.
I played the first AoW a ton, but at the time AoW2 came out I was heavily into Etherlords 2 ( what a awesome game it was :D ) , which meant I more or less ignored AoW2.
And once AoW3 came out I had already gotten my AoW "fix" from playing all of the new King's Bounty games

Agree about Etherlords 2, although it was an unfinished product (Nival doing HoMM 5) with campaigns only. I played a lot of AoW2: SM, King's Bounty as well, but when AoW 3 came out, it proved to be THE game for me. Once I got into modding the game, I was hopelessly addicted. Still am, actually. :)

Awesome, guess I'll be checking out AoW3 over the weekend then :)

Anyone played any of the Warlords game, and know if they are any good??
One of my earliest gaming memories was playing Warlords 1 on MS DOS, but I've never touched any of the newer Warlords games o_O

I'm guilty of having played Warlords 2 a lot at the time. Still have the game in some folder called DOS-GAMES. You could describe the original AoW as Warlords 2 with an extra layer of explicit tactical combat (combat in Warlords 2 resembles combat in the older Civ games) AoW is quite probably heavily inspired by WL 2. So if you played AoW there is no need to go back to WL. Later I tried Warlords 4, but it doesn't offer anything, that wouldn't be better in other games.
You probably gave Disciples 2 (Gold) a try. Not the best game out there - but probably still the game (of this kind) with the best campaigns (and if you got such a high with EL2, then campaigns seem to be important for you). Graphically, atmospherically nice with that grainy handscetched look, and a really long affair.

Jolly Joker, you are correct! We were definitely inspired by the Warlords games. We were real Warlords fans back in 90ies :D
Hey, Arnout! Nice to see you here as well. Yes, I definitely remember playing AoW for the first time and thinking, nice, that's like playing an improved Warlords II, except the combat is infinitely better. :).
I remember buying a Sega Genesis with a Japan adapter specifically in order to play "Advanced Daisenryaku" or Advanced Military Commander (which in 1994 was ported by SSI to a game called Panzer General), then going nuts on Master of Orion in 93, with Warlords 2 as a welcome diversion, replacing the latter with Panzer General in 94, going back to Warlords 2 Deluxe version in 95, and then in 96 becoming irrevocably hooked on Heroes of Might and Magic 2.

Anyway, I'm really curious what you guys came up with for your new game. You know, I've been in a professional relationship with Ubisoft since 2005, and when Ubisoft decided not to continue the work with Nival for HoMM 6 (or M&M: Heroes 6 as it was called), I tried to get them to contact you, because I thought, if someone would be able to come up with a HoMM game design that would blow all predecessors out of the water it would be Triumph Studios, but alas, they had other plans. As it turned out (imo, at least) Ihad been right then, because you came up with AoW 3 which I felt was exactly what a sequel should be. :)

Looks like the game announcement will be on Sunday, right?
EDIT: No, tomorrow as part of the announcement show, with a Q&A on Sunday, is what I read. Right?

I really like the idea - but I was also pretty shocked that Elemental War of Magic turned out to be so boring, and Fallen Enchantress wasn't much better.
It's probably pretty difficult to blow the game dimensions up, strategically, and keep a certain tightness, while creating a worthy AI at the same time PLUS having interesting battles. I also was disappointed with the result of the glut of 4X space games. It's always about maximizing some output, and what I really like with AoW3 is the fact that no matter how good your output is, troop quality (in terms of medals/upgrades) is at least as important. Which means, that I like a game in which you cannot just build your empire to eventually lash at everyone with superior tech, but simply have to put everything to a practical use immediately.

I find that most games encourage exploration and conquest because they have resources, cities and such which can be conquered for much lower cost than building new cities and when you can use these resources to snowball your economy.

In master of magic I found Gnolls to be amongst the best starting races just becuase of the wolf rider unit which require very Little infrastructure, don't cost much (especially if you add in the infrastructure cost) and is overall a very strong unit whose only real weakness is magical reistance which is not much of a weakness because at the Point it really matter you can have other much more expensive units and you will at that Point Control the map and have the resources to mass produce anything you want.

Imagine Fallen Enchantress: Legendary Heroes. Add the city development system from Endless Legend. Make mana a per hero ressource (not global), HoMM3-like hero upgrading of skills system, deeper relations between characters like friendship, loyalty to eachother and the crown etc (think a little bit of EU: Rome). Add naval warfare, seamonsters, and naval upgrade paths for heroes. Add mechanichs for minority races and rebellions, huger maps with tons of factions, deeper diplomacy EU4 like with vasalls and intricate relations between realms, make the game more epic in scale with more techs, more to explore, more creatures, quests. Add religions, and game mechanics arround it. Add Stellaris like empire and race customization. Add a tiny bit more immersion to the battles - I really didn't like there where no maluses to archers due to distances or blocking objects in Fallen Enchantress (just don't overdo it, since you don't want battles to last much longer then in FE: LH in this complex strategical game), add city sieges and naval blockades, add mechanics for raiding of trade routes, add some crafting perhaps.... etc.....

Then you'll start getting closer to what I'd like to see! :)
