For the folks with the APPCRASH problems at the splash screen:

I tried compatibility mode and reinstalling, but they didn't work. It did work after updating display drivers: I run GeForce 9600 GT 512MB. (Edit: Nvidia just released updates for this series on July 21, FYI)

All seems OK so far now. Game loads just fine, intro vid plays, and haven't noticed anything else yet (have only been at it for an hour or so).

Good luck!

I'm having the same issue as the original poster. I'm also running Vista 64 bit, and I purchased the game off Stardock's Impulse.

So I installed both games, and I'm thinking..."Heck yes! I got what should be an awesome game!"

And so I load up the game, and it crashed....

So after trying a few more times, I verified the install with Impulse, and behold, the program said it wasn't done properly, and it had an update for me. I quickly installed and tried again, but another crash.

So I'll toss my stats here right now.

AMD Athlon 64 X2 Dual Core Processor 5000+ 2.6 GHz
4 Gigabytes of RAM
NVIDIA Geforce 9800 GT (with updated drivers, I did the update yesterday)
Vista Ultimate 64bit, Service Pack 1

Not sure if you guys need anything else...

Hi commanderkai

hmmm. Maby it has somethingto do with the startup resolution or settings... look up a following file
C:\Users\yourname\Documents\East India Company\Config\options.txt,
change windowed = 0 to windowed = 1
and set a low resolution like
screen_height = 960
screen_width = 1280

see if that helps

or try different values from the
Graphics
{

}
block.

Let us know how things are working

Thanks,
Janne

Sorry, none of the ideas you provided panned out, including both at the same time.

Could it be it's installed on a hard drive separate from the one with the system files (I have two, an 80gig and a 320gig) And I've found that some games HATE being installed on a separate hard drive. But those games were Spore, Sid Meier Pirates, and Simcity 4.

I'll try that, hold on

I am running vista 64 bit and the game crashes almost immediately when i start it says this program has stopped working with no further info.

Sadly that didn't work out either....

Anybody have any ideas? I don't like paying for a game without even being able to play it...

Not sure about everyone else's problems, but for me it was crashing with the "Application has stopped working" because:

a) the "\Documents\East India Company\Config" folder didn't get the "keybinds.txt" file installed correctly - it was just missing

b) the default keybinds.txt file is full of duplicate entries for keyboard keys

After manually copying the keybinds.txt from the program install Config directory (C:\Program Files\Paradox Interactive\East India Company\Config) to the Documents config directory (in Vista - C:\Users\<username>\Documents\East India Company\Config) and editing it to no longer have the same keys listed for multiple commands, East India Company started working! I also removed the multiple keybindings per command. Not sure if that matters. Plays fine for me now. Definitely not a graphics problem for me.

I debugged my problems using the "C:/Program Files/Paradox Interactive/East India Company/log.html" file. Here is what I've worked out: If it has a file name or two, those files are likely missing from the given directory. If it just lists a bunch of black text about loading stuff but still crashes, it is likely the keybinding problem. Hope this helps.

I think I have the same problem described in this thread as well.

I just downloaded EIC from Gamersgate and tried to run it on Windows 7RC 64bit. I guess Win 7 is not officialy supported but the problem is the same as described with Vista 64bit. I just get the splash screen and a pop-up that says "There was a problem with your installation. Reinstall and try again."

Tried to find the keybinds.txt but I could not find the folder in "users" Recklam suggested but to no avail.

Any help would be greatly appreciated, thanks.

I know my driver is old, but as far as I can tell no new drivers have been released for this card since then. And since it's a laptop, I can't replace the video card without replacing the entire computer, AFAIK. I've run into this before, I should've thought to check before buying.

Reklam's tip changed the log file from saying the keybinds.txt wasn't there, to basically nothing loading....

The game doesn't crash persay, Mr. Cloud, but it honestly doesn't load. The loading screen pops up, then the Microsoft Error thing appears saying the program needed to close. I can copy the log, but it probably won't make any sense.

Ah. Looks like I removed a few lines that had duplicates and also didn't make sense. Might be these that are causing a problem:

Code:
camera_move_rotate_up = w
camera_move_rotate_down = s
camera_move_rotate_left = t
camera_move_rotate_right = y

Here is my keybinds.txt file. With this it seems to work for me:

Code:
Controls
{
// user defined key binds

//move player
camera_move_forward = w
camera_move_backward = s
camera_move_left = a
camera_move_right = d

//launch cannons
launch_leftside_cannons = q
launch_rightside_cannons = e

camera_move_zoom_in = wheel-up

I also fooled around with the options.txt file. Here is mine just in case it matters (might need to manually adjust the screen resolution:

Someone asked for the "before" keybinds.txt. Not sure how it helps, just the one that was installed, but here goes:

Startup issues

Couple of possible solutions:

a) If you are running windows 7, try to start the game from the installation directory instead of the start menu. There has been some problems with the windows 7 games explorer and trying to run games from there.

b) It may well be that the DRM is causing troubles because the registeration wasn't successful. You can check this via startdock's web page:

http://www.stardock.com/support/index.aspx

just input your e-mail you used in the installation and you will receive an e-mail containing info of your registered games. If the registeration was successful, you should see your cd key etc in the mail. If the registeration wasn't successful the support page might even say that the email wasn't found in the database.

c) If you have an older graphics card or the card barely meets the minimum requirements you could try this: http://forum.paradoxplaza.com/forum/showpost.php?p=9896475&postcount=4 additionally you can try to start the game with these parameters: -ps_2_0 or -ps_2_a or -ps_2_b (start the game from command line or create a shortcut to the eastindia.exe and add one of these to the end ( eastindia.exe -ps_2_0 ). This forces the game to start with pixel shader version 2.

Here's something you can try, as this has worked in the past with some games and Vista. Check your DEP setting:

1. Go to Control Panel --> System and Maintenance --> System.

2. Click on Advanced system settings menu option to bring up System Properties.

3. Click the Advanced tab. Under the Perfomance section at the top, click on Settings button to bring up Performance Options.

4. Click on Data Execution Prevention tab

5. Mine has the the second radio button option selected, Turn on DEP for all programs and services except those I select:. Click on the Add button down at the bottom.

6. Locate you install directory and select the eastindia.exe file.

7. Click Apply, then OK.

Good luck.

Got it! It was the aero theme or whatever it is called. Just right clicke the .exe and from the compatibility tab selected "disable visual themes". Didn't cross my mind earlier cause up to now Win7 detects when a game is incompatible and disables it automatically (ie HoI2, Space Rangers 2, Anno 1404). For some reason it did not happen with EIC.

Now the game runs pretty smoothly under Win 7 64bit - nvidia 9800GTX+

Thank you so much for the time you took to write the replies though.

Crappy Release Week Service

Reklam's fix worked. Copy and paste is king.

So this is in response to the amazingly lack luster Game Dev who's been posting.

I loved how you blew off the first 10 people saying it was a Beta error, guess you never fixed it in Final.

Then when the "final" version does the same thing a forum poster figures it out. Thankfully some of us know our way around computers and managed to get it working. Of course now my patch link in game does NOTHING.

It's safe to say no matter how good the game play is I will NEVER buy one of your products again nor recommend this to anyone. If you can't be responsive to people with game issues and you get beat to the work-around solution by a poster than who in their right mind would pay you guys again for anything.

Feel free to send me an email or a post telling me how sorry you are this happened as you did above. Honestly it won't change a thing.
