I applied this patch over a pure 1.08 patch.

Whenever I try to start a game, I get the message "Critical error! Excel file not found" and then the game crashes.

Trying downloading the beta patches just before the April 21st one, and see if it works. :)

D.

With the April 15th one I get the same error.

I know it's installing because the it says the correct date up in the corner -- I don't know what could be the problem.

OK....I tried the Feb. 2nd one and that one worked.

I had never installed any of the EU II betas before, so it may be that there are some files in the earlier betas that are necessary for the later betas to work. It's that's so I didn't see it written anywhere.

Edit: After intalling the Feb. 2nd one successfully, I tried to install the April 12th one again, and it crashed.

Which excel file does it say that you are missing?

I've got a 1.00 install with 1.08 and then the April 21st beta and don't have a problem. I suspect something is wring with your initial installation or that some files may have been deleted by accident.

EDIT: What this sounds like is that the latest 2 betas have a new file that is installed that was not in previous versions. The adj-defs.csv file in the map folder. What it sounds like is that when you install the latest betas you are only installing the exe file and not the entire contents of the patch. When you're unzipping the file, make sure you select everything and then extract the files to the EU2 directory.

No, that's not the case, 1.08+the latest beta is all that is required. Your problem lies elsewhere.

The extension .csv is also used by Microsoft Excel and represents "comma separated values" file type. I think the problem is related to that (somehow), though I use Excel too and haven't encountered such errors...

Anyway, Support issue really.

Who is the publisher of your version, their logo will be on the cd.
Do you have any mods installed?

THis usually happens when you installed the patch to the wrong folder.
IE a new folder or the all the files in the main EU2 folder instead of the folders they need to go in.

This is almost certainly the problem. I can reproduce the issue by using the Apr. 12 beta EU2.exe without the rest of the files from the patch. The game loads but errors when loading the scenario. There is no filename given in the error message.

See my post. ;)
This is not the first time things like this have happened to someone. ;)

:eek:o Yes, that's it. I never realized I had to select all of the files. Every Beta I've had before seemed to work fine just extracting the .exe file. Thanks to everyone.

Once again proving to be some of the best tech support anywhere. :)

You may have been missing files before and not known it.
As in useing older files instead of the new ones.

I am having this exact same problem. I don't even own excel so of course there isn't an excel file.

All the other normal patches have always worked fine but I've never tried to install one of the betas before.
Micro$oft calls .csv files "Excel csv files" because Excel happens to be able to open them. They are really Comma-Separated Value (text) files and Paradox games use them for many of their game files. Make sure you are unzipping the full patch into your install directory, not just the EU2.exe. Also make sure the other files are going into their subdirectories and not all into the main folder.

What he said.

April 21 Beta - how to install???

How exactly should the April 21 beta be installed? I extracted all the files from the beta download into the EU2 folder on my hard drive. I did not install some into various EU2 subdirectories. The game seems to run fine - and on the scenario selection screen, I now get a "Apr 21 2005 - (TZBV)" label in the upper left corner rather than the previous "...1.08" label (patch 1.08 was previously installed and worked fine).

So, if some of the beta files should actually have been put into EU2 subfolders, could you please tell me what beta files go into which subdirectories - or is there an earlier post that details this? Thank you.

Well you need to extract the files into the main EU2 folder, but select "maintain keep directory structure/Maintain folder structure" So that the files that need to go into the correct sub folders. It could be that the program you used has that setting automatic. As for the Version number that is in the EXE so it would be and belongs in the main folder so that really tells you nothing about the other files.

I do. I downloaded the patch Johan linked to in the "Latest Beta Patch" thread then installed it as directed in this thread. Single player works like a dream but the version number is 21April2005-(RGOV) so I am unable to play multiplayer as it is a different version.

I should note that my copy was purchased through the 6 in 1 pack which came with six Paradox titles. I bought it after I misplaced my old EU2 disk and I have a feeling the problem with RGOV originates with that release.
