So the latest in Koei's long-time grand strategy game had an English version released on Steam just a few days ago.

Having played it myself, it's nowhere near as bad as the reviews seem to indicate.

I love the game, but I just wish Paradox had made it, so we could be sure that the AI would be patched to perfection, and it would receive extra content years into release.

I can't help but wonder if this is the approach Paradox should be taking into the "RPG" genre: rather than creating a dedicated RPG, creating a strategy-RPG hybrid (like CK2, but even more RPG elements, such as a shorter time period, the ability to wander around the world as a hedge knight/free officer/nomad, and a focus on cities rather than provinces). Perhaps Paradox might even take a foray into historical fiction, though I know that this would be met with some skepticism by a lot of the fanbase.

Gameplay:

What on earth makes you think that Paradox would "patch the AI into perfection"? lol?

Paradox AI has been getting better, and it gets updated constantly. Bear in mind that we get a lot of extra content which in most games would create AI nightmares.

I think Paradox fans are unduly harsh on the company. They do a very good job at supporting their games post-release.

EU4 AI has been patched into "perfection" if you keep your expectations realistic for a computer game, especially one that involves hundreds of "players".
They behave more or less rationally, aggressively enough and even take emotion a little bit into account with trust and historical friendships.

I don't play EU IV, so I'll take your word for it. As someone who has played almost every Paradox title since 2001, though, I find your claim suspicious.

Most of the bad reviews are coming from people who have played previous RTK games are using them to measure RTK13. RTK13 is by no means a bad strategy game and is probably one of the better ones out there, certainly the best one focused on China right now, but it doesn't have the developed RPG aspects past players were hoping for. Some people also don't like the Total War style battles which actually dumbed down the combat quite a bit - instead of actual strategic decisions it's been reduced to TW style magical powerups. I myself prefer how combat was done in the old games where everything was fought out on the same map, it felt more epic that way. For some reason the graphics are also worse than Nobunaga's Ambition and runs worse as well.

This is a major problem. When you inevitably rise to viceroy, you don't feel like a powerful right hand man to the ruler. You feel like someone who has to babysit half of the realm (and assist the other half as they get beat), without some of the key tools the rulers has but does not use (like diplomacy) and you have keep flicking in out between managing a battle and managing half of the realm.

This is a really bad aspect. You literally feel you playing the same battle over and over. And it's not even TW. You charge a heavy cav unit into archers, and not much actually happens, they just tank the damage until spearmen arrive.

It's also uglier than ROTK 11.

I actually like this aspect. The archers aren't totally useless for once.

ROTK VIII and X were the best as far as RPG mechanics went, XIII's RPG mechanics are a bit shallow in comparison.

It's still an amazing game though!
