I was just wondering and this question may have been posed before, but is there going to be some of the stranger and more sickening parts of royal families in this game as well. For example bastard children and the occasional children whose parents were a little too close on the family tree? Although it is a little sick it was a part of of some royal families. Just Asking.

I would expect that feature to be in the game. :)

After a few generations of gameplay it might be difficult to keep track of who is related to whom. Maybe the ledger should have a Cousin Control Sheet? Or perhaps have a 'check relationship' button on the marriage proposal pop up? Otherwise you might not notice that the AI is proposing that your prince marry his own niece or something like that . . . :D

Ahhh good old inbreeding. You could do that in Medieval Total War. I remembered i had an interesting line of rulers with Italy doing that.....

Thread cleaned. Stuff deleted. Now, back on topic! :)

Since the game has a dynamic simulation of dynasties I would assume inbreeding is a possible danger. What effects it might show is more uncertain though...

As for IRL, the Church was very strict on consanguinity in regards to marriages (theoretically), but sis also show a remarkable ability to bend the same rules if needed (in practice). I hope we at least will have some clergyman popping up if you try to marry too close, where you can choose to ignore (and draw the wrath of the Church) or comply (i.e. not marrying)... or, alternatively, ask/bribe for a dispensation. :)

Since this was one of the more used tactice among the nobility I would certainly hope that it is in the game. :D

As sick as it sounds, for realism's sake I agree. Let the inbreeding begin!

Sick? Modern laws on consanguinity are far more lax compared to the medieval ones... Roman civil law (which was adopted by the Church) did not allow marriages within four degrees. In the nineth century this was changed to seven degrees, while in 1215 it was returned to four. The degree was found by counting generations back to the first common ancestor. If two individuals descended in an unequal number of generations from a common ancestor, the more distant descent governed the degree of consanguinity. So what does this mean?

A relation in four degrees would look like this:
Code:
          x
        __|__
       | |
       x 4
     __|__ |
    | | |
    x 3 4
  __|__ | |
 | | | |
 x 2 3 4
 |__ | | |
 | | | | |
ego 1 2 3 4

This ment that even after the loosening up at the Fourth Lateran Council of 1215 you could not marry someone you shared a great-great-grandparent with, or a third cousin.

General practice was to marry anyone who suited, though, and very rarely did the Church intervene if both parts in a merriage were content. It was an often used exuse for annulment though, to "accidentally" discover that one were too close related...

I think I'm gonna be sick. The very notion of marrying anybody from any branch of my family is just disgusting. Thanks for ruining my appetite for the night Harvard. :)

It's only a question of how you far you count - we're all related... ;)

Ok if you wanna be techincal yes you and I are related. My long lost extended cousion to the billionth power or whatever. But that hardly matters. It's a matter of principle dang nabbit!

Not nec all related...unless all life came from a single cell, which is of course possible. Otherwise it is possible that we are all not...anyway...heh

Yeah. I wonder are royal marriages tied to amount of princesses and are royals available as commanders.
