What are the major differences between ARMA vanilla & WIF? (Latest versions of both)

What's better in WIF?

What's worse in WIF?

I plan to try out WIF and would like an idea of what to expect.

Thanks in advance

Major difference lies in the battle system; battles are far more realistic and last longer. Some people enjoy it, some people don't like losing. WiF is way tougher and takes far more planning and cohesion. Thats the basic answer apart from awesome graphics etc. you can check out a comparison on the one of the pages in the Hoi2 wiki.

How does WIF change combat mechanism? Does it just give more penalty to a player or does it actually have some different way of interpreting combat action? If the mod just gives penalty to a player (or advantage to AI) during combat, it's pretty pointless.

WiF increased the defense value of land units by a large scale this makes the firepower overload unlikely in WiF unless the force ratio is very very large between attacker and defender. This has the result making battle longer and which in turn lead to more losses.

With the longer battle time, AI often has plenty time to reinforce the spot that is being attacked. This makes traditional breakthrough battle much harder for people who are only used to vanilla game. You of course also get more time to reinforcement the weak point in the line just like AI does when attacked.

It does take more planning for WiF when attacking, which makes the game more interesting. The events are better as well and with more flavour.

I personally don't particularly like the tech tree set up, but that is just me. Also the terran map color annoys the hell out of me in it, I like the vanilla better.

Overall speaking it is a good Mod, best experience by playing Germany or Soviet Union, some very fun events for the first players.

Make no mistake AI will get some help like free divisions for Soviet Union in events, some may say it is cheating, but honestly AI need all the help it can get.

From my limited superficial observations in using a MOD with increased combat time I would have to guess that damage per round is reduced making the battle take twice as long. I notice in the combat screen that it takes far longer for either sides strength bars to begin suffering any reductions. Necessaruly that offers much more time for reenforcements to arrive.

I have not been able to determine if the increased amount of time allows for more experience points to be gained for leaders.

I use WIF Gold rather than platinum. Keeps the same techs and colours.

As for the mod itself as others have said it makes the game a lot harder. Ive beaten Germany as Britain but simply cannot beat the Soviets as Germany, even with the most detailed and maticulus game Ive ever played.
(In my last game as well as the normals I took Norway, Sweeden, Greece, North Africa and Iraq. Allied with Finland, Hungary, Italy, Romania, Bulgaria,
and Turkey. Attacked from all directions with well layed out forces and a great airforce and still got beat.)

it makes 20 tank divisions in the winter unable to defeat a single russian militia

I lost my first serious game in WiF. Got stopped in Russian mud and Russians pushed me back for like 4 years until D-Day made me surrender moments before Berlin was red.

I also play WiF Gold and prefer it to WiF Platinum, although a Titanium version has recently come out. I've had a strikingly similar experience as Umpa Lumpa above. Indeed, the Soviets began pushing me back as early as the Spring of 1942. It was ugly. And I had reached the suburbs of Moscow just as the snow began to fall

So expect a lot of detailed planning before and during any major offensive. Even France will give you a good fight, even though they can still be beaten in less than a month with overwhelming force.

Oh, if you don't like the colors/graphics, you can always install your own as I like to use DMP graphics/sprites.
