Armor and Armor Shred

I am struggling to understand the value of armor and armor shred mechanics. I can spend a lot of supplies to buy items that do these things, but I have not been able to figure if, or how, they work. Any suggestions as to where I can find an explanation of these mechanics?

Armor is something some enemies have (and you can from items). It's a number next to their health bar and it reduces incoming damage by that amount. Armor shred just removes armor.
