Under what conditions is an army annihilated upon defeat rather than simply forced to retreat? I've noticed that annihilation occurs when fighting on a one-province island, and when a recently landed overseas invasion is defeated. Is a friendly province always needed as a target to retreat to? Is it possible to cut off retreats by placing little armies in eligible provinces, or do I have to actually capture every surrounding province?

For islands and invasions, I think the same rules apply. There is nowhere to run, so they get annihilated.

If the army is moving off ships into a province witha defending force, and lose, the ships are gone, and the army will be stuck on the beach until the army is gone. Unlike EU where you could have ships left ofshre to pick up the survivors, there is no such thing in CK.

Once the army is on land, it would just move to a different neutral province, if there is one adjacent.

Other than those two scenarios, the only time I think armies get annihilated is when they don't fold to lack of morale, until they are completely killed. Don't see that often, but I think I have seen that happen a few times.
