So here we go. After applying the 1.02 patch I decided that a reinstall could be a good idea since I had been playing around with the files a bit and wanted the original configuration.

Well anyway now that I try to reinstall it refuses to do so. I cannot even begin to initiate installation.

System specs.

Intel III 750 mhz
512meg RAM
Nvidia Geforce 2 GTS
Soundblaster Live (or some such)
Win 2k

And yes I have the latest DirectX and files for my graphics card.

Were you the Admin for both the game install, and the patch install?

Yup do as the magic duck says and let us know. :)

Did you use the Win2k uninstall utility in Control Panel to uninstall or did you use HoI's uninstaller?

When you say that it refused to reinstall, where exactly does the installation attempt fail? Does it show up as an option when you put in the CD?

If you do a cursory look with Windows Explorer do you see any lingering folders or files?

I used the HoI uninstaller and it seemed to be a bit weird when it uninstalled now that you mention it. More like it tried to install the game instead of uninstalling it but the result was achieved. And I have removed every single file linked to HoI on the drive but still it´s bugging me.

Oh and the disc doesn´t autostart anymore, you can still access the disc but if you try to run setup it shows an error message and stops.

Curious! There has to be something that lurking somewhere on your system still. Does it show up as an ininstall option if you go to Start-->Control Panel-->Add/Remove Software?

When you checked the HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\software in regedit was there any entry under \paradox ?

EDIT: I forgot to ask...are there any shortcut paths still lingering in your start menu that point to HoI?

Well there was a registry both for 1.01 and 1.02 but I removed them. And for the others no.
Did you also remove the HoI sub-folder in the registry? If not, maybe it's looking for the latest installed version there and then getting all confused about it. :D

Unless you still have EU2 installed on your system, you could try deleting the entire Paradox registry entry...

I'm trying to remember if there's anywhere else an install log is being kept so I'll go and have a look for that while you answer the above.

Another thought...

Have you done a cold boot since you uninstalled HoI? Maybe there's something lurking in the BIOS or something in unpurged memory somewhere?

I thought of that and removed that one as well.

Uhm cold boot? A bit less techno talk please for the non-initiated.

Completely shutdown your system and turn all power off to it for about 30 sec. Then reboot.

Hmmmm....I refuse to admit defeat so...

What is the exact error message?

I'll confess that I skipped Win2k and jumped straight to WIn XP so I'm less familiar with the event log in that OS. If you go into your admin events, do you get a specific error message? In WinXP it's access by:

Start-->Control Panel-->Performance and Maintenence-->Administrative Tools-->Event Viewer-->Applications

But it's probably a little different in 2k. What I'm looking for is what it thinks the cause is for the bail out of the install attempts.

This is what the error log says:

Det finns ett felaktigt block på enhet \Device\CdRom0.

Translated loosely as;

There is a faulty block at unit \device\cdrom0
Makes no sence to me.
