Where did you installed the game? If you installed it to C:\Program Files..., then a reinstall to another folder might help. E.g. C:\Games\... Vista and Win7 have some issues with old games, if installed into the C:\Program Files folders.

Its installed through Steam -- do you even have an option to designate another location? I thought steam saved under steam and you did not have an option. I'll have to try that.

The game will install in Steam's directory, for example in C:\Games\Steam\steamapps\common. (There will be your AOD install.)
But you can move a Steam install. Just have a look in the Steam forums. A way to do this is to do the following:
1. Backup your steamapps folder so you don't have to re-download all your games.
2. De-install Steam and remove all remnants.
3. Re-download and install Steam in for example C:\Games (NOT in Program Files or Program Files (x86))!
4. Start Steam, let it update, configure your preferred settings. Then close Steam.
5. Copy/paste your backuped steamapps folder into the respective directory. (C:\Games\Steam).
6. Start Steam, it'll most likely download some missing files/checking the games, but you won't have to re-download all your games.

Maybe that resolves your prob. with AOD and Steam. (This steps are for moving the Steam install without having you re-download your games. If you're unsure, have a look at the Steam forums!)

I got the same problem, only with Impulse. I tried what everyone else recommended, and the only thing that worked was setting the game compatability to Windows 98. The game runs shaky, but atleast it runs.
