i don't really know how to preface thing but I just tried recently released Gods and Kings mod and felt like writing about my game even ifnit doesnt make sese.

It is 1444 AD, the once upstart kingdom of Ayutthaya went into downward spiral as succession crisis broke out. The Khmer Kingdom saw this as an invitation to asserts dominance and supported the Uthong child king, but dropped the pretense as soon as the Suphanburi elite promise to be tributary. The Uthong were forced out of Chao Phraya heartland and moved south. It was during this time of chaos that low-life merc named Ram rose through the rank as his superiors kept dying. Eventunally betraying Thong Lan and ordained himself as Ramkhamhaeng(Ram the Bold) Songtham(Righteous) of Ratchaburi(City of King).

Historians often attribute the success of early Songtham state to three factors below.

pDptm4C.png

Firstly, the Songtham sees ally as expendable asset rather than someone they have obligation to. They are ready to befriend foe and antagonize ally as soon as it benefit their goal. As long as they are strong enough to enforce their authority, no action could be taken against them. The fate suffered by the Khun Lo King of Mae Nam who were mercilessly trampled by elephant in the aftermath of Ratchaburi's campaign for Sukhothai, another ally of Khun Lo.

Secondly, The Ruler of Ratchaburi ruler are often a risk-taker. Not afraid to put their nation into heavy debts if, ironically, it get them a land so rich that they would never get bankrupt.

rCHRQvY.png

Lastly, not something exclusive to the Ratchaburi kingdom as mainstream history would led you to believe. The Elephant Cavalry of Muang Thai. It was due to the risktaker mindset of the Songtham ruler that made them overutilized their elephants in warfare and simply overpowering every other armies in the region.

Interestingly enough, the begrudged Khmer overlord was the last overwhelming enemy the Songtham faced in their quests for Thai Unification. Their very first foe was Pagan Kingdom which happen to support the Petchaburi clique and marched through Sadhuim, prompting the emergency Mon-Thai alliance.

The Mad Prince attempted to covet Petchaburi but his meager muslim auxilaries force fell flat to experienced cavalry force.

It was during the war with Sukhothai that King Ramkhamhaeng denounced all nobility and brahmin for their treachery against people of Siam and proclaimed House of Songtham as divine protector by the disenfrenchined clergy

UspM4JZ.png

The Khun Lo and Phra Ruang were the first example upon the traitor of Siam how harsh Songtham's vengance could be. As described by ,Famous Pagan Poet, Minye Swa. "The Thai noble were pushed from the cliff of Phra Bang and the Laotian's leg were tied with a rock as they sunk into the depth of Mekong, meeting their naga ancestor in the watery palace"

yYdMxcZ.png

Despite the seemingly cruel act committed by Ramkhamhaeng, his campaign was always full of auspicious sign. As seen in the painting of him receiving the Emerald Buddha by the angel disguised as mere footsoldier crawling out of Chiang Mai palace's debris.

veGfco3.png

Dishearteningly, this aquisition of Holy relic is followed by what the uneducated mass called "Emerald curse", an unexplainable phenomena where our most talented advisor became irrational and ended up dead. The Sangha explained that since the Songtham bloodline is so pure and heavenly, those who assist them ended up dying out of virtue fulfillment, achieving nirvana and allowing other talented advisor a chance of nirvana.

nqc1RA8.png

Regrettably, this also apply to Ramkhamhaeng's first son, dying valiantly in the battle against the khmer despot. Hao's death wasn't in vain however, as his army fervently clashed against the khmer long enough for Ramkhamhaeng to heroically save the day and push the Khmer out of Chao Phraya valley for good!

And thus, the conquering spree of Ramkhamhaeng ended.

Congrats on your expansion. Do you have any goals for expansion?

I'm not familiar with the mod, but what happened in China? Are they in a Warring States-esque period again?

For expansion, I plan to get the whole Indochina subcontinent under my rule through vassalization and war. Maybe returning Buddhism to India.

China is split between Millenarist cult south(Meitrayan Song) and more typical Confucian north(Han), which somehow ended up having more fight in them than vanilla Ming because both of them don't have Empire of China mechanic depleting their armies efficiency.

With the reclamation of Ayutthaya by Ramkhamhaeng the Restorer, the land of Siam is finally freed of Angkoran's yoke. However across the Mekong still habor the venganceful Khun Lo pretender and Suphannaphum exile, Ramkhamhaeng decided that splendor of Siam is more important than rooting out minor nuisance and commerced the construction of "Krung Thep" or "Divine Capital" which will house the Songtham family as well as a birthplace of future buddha as prophecied by Gautama Buddha.

WIth the conquest of Lanna, northern Chao Phraya valley is now protected and influx of northern serfs helped the construction of Krung Thep massively.

With Siam unified under the Songtham, many neigbhoring realms begun appeasing Ratchaburi. While not strongest of world power, Ratchaburi stands among the cradle of civilization like Zhongguo, Bharat and Iran.

Regrettably, this will be the last accomplishment of Ramkhamhaeng as he was assansinated the very next year. The Royal Chronicle put a blame on Khun Lo of Mae Nam, but according to later historian this seem to be post-hoc justification for conquest of Laos. The mainstream Thai historian suggests that Ong Ek, the captive khmer noble, was the culprit. But that was ruled out by literally everyone outside Thailand as another myth justifying Khmer oppression. Regrettably, not even diviner or brahmin can channel his spirit for answer because he already left the circle of reincarnation due to massive amount of merit he make by creating prosperous and stable nation for Thai people.

During this time of crisis, his nephew, Ram and Queen Narai took control of the army and rein in the squabbling faction. With Ram christening himself as "Ramracha" (Ram the King).
9d74DyT.png

"It wouldn't be a time of crisis without an impostor among us" is what Ramracha proclaimed when the news of some no-name general pretending to be his dead-cousin raised from the grave by local shaman reached Ratchaburi(the city).
m3KSXB5.png

Without delay, the impostor prince was put down faster than Ramracha's conoration ceremony.
S2aPKUB.png

Within a short halt in expansion, the world started to forgot the feat of Ramkhamhaeng and treated Ratchaburi more callously.

Some news of consolation is from Angkor, where the King of Khmer impiously slaughter his people and pile them up as fisherman pile their catch. The cycle of karma will catch up to them soon.

Ratchaburi's fall in Great Power status is sad, but I wonder how long it will last. The new king is apparently about to conquer new lands, so that might increase the realm's international standing...

Ramracha and many rival of Siam or how I learn to actually make threadmark
With all the power surrounding Ratchaburi greatly weakened by internal turmoil, Ramracha the First proclaim his suzerianty over all Tai fiefdoms which included part of Chinese subcontinent much to the ire of both Han and Song.
KfGR6dp.png

In their preparation toward Siege of Angkor, the Siamese employed cannoneer into their armies for the first time. The sheer firepower proven instrumental to their future victories against Angkor.
6u4IZKI.png

Right before the war with Angkor, Ramracha saw fit to eliminate the Khun-Lo remnant to prevent them from retaking Khorat plateau during the war. The Lao serf across Mekong were forcibly relocated to Chao Phraya valley and work the land left behind by peasent fleeing Angkorean force. It was also during his reign that he codified the proper law regarding serf.

While the constant war made Ratchaburi a pariah state in it's time, their conquest and conversion effort made the later generation of Buddhist eternally grateful for their 'unmeritful' conducts.

1480 was the day which many Dharmic zealots regarded as the beginning of Kali-Yuga, the empire of Angkor stood at the periphery of Dharmic civilization but their downfall was what kickstarted Siamese imperialism into Bharat and reduced them from one of the world most practiced religion into fringe cult of Buddhism.

"19 Feburary 1480, the armies of Ratchaburi which stood at the border of Angkor marched toward Angkor. Few centuries later the same armies would be brutalizing faithful of Bharat and Zhongguo alike"

- No Srey, Lost People of Khmer

fbMgwc8.png

To the Dharmic world, 1480 is the year where all fall apart. To the Siamese it was just another year of conquest, another Empire. Sacking of Angkor was a karmic retribution according to those who survived the sack of Ayutthaya.

Sadly the conquest of Angkor had to be halted as the monsoon stopped the Siamese advance and a truce was agreed, to Siamese's consolation they have reduced Angkor into rump state split into two.

Congrats on defeating Angkor!

I'm sure that angering both Chinese dynasties won't cause problems in the future...
