Hi to everybody

I would like to ask you about assasination attempts.
My current ruler has an intrigue of 13 and his spymaster of 14 for a total of 27.
However often (really often) when I try to assassinate someone (in my court or in other courts) i receive a failure message.
Considering that assination cost you gold and, if you are discovered, loss of prestige and reputation, it doesn't sound as a viable option.
I usually try to assassinate heirs of other courts so that some of my heir can inherit.

Am I doing something wrong? Can you please help me and give me some tip?

Thank you very much

P.S: I play DV 2.1

When calculating the chances of success, the game will use your combined Intrigue against the opposing ruler's (and spymaster's) Intrigue score.

When assassinating within your own court, you are actually competing against yourself.

You can try to first assasinate the opposing court's spymaster and then pause immediately before they appoint a new one, to improve your chances. This is an exploit, but if you don't mind that, then go for it.

I am not sure what the base chances are, but you can expect a few failures per successful attempt.

Ofcourse killing off family members will be even more risky as you will get the 'Kinslayer' trait if discovered.

I have the impression that Assassination attempts have a low chance of success no matter what you do, but I agree with TempestDK. Killing off the destination Spy Master (and immediately pausing) will help your chances.

I had a King with intrigue of 17 and a spymaster with intrigue of 15, so the majority of my assassination attempts were successful.

However, the resulting trashing of piety and prestige, plus the retaliation, damn near finished off my kingdom. So off one experiment with murder rather than invasion, I'm now much more cautious about trying this again - no matter how good the stats are.

I'll only make assasinations when the odds of succes are high (my intrigue vs. that of the target) and when the benefits of success outweight the negatives of being caught. Like when I can inherit titles by removing few people from the line of succesion, or if that huge empire neighbouring me can be blunged into chaos by assasinating their king.

I would like to thank you all for your suggestions/comments.
I suppose that I was doing it right but the game doesn't favour the assasination route...
Maybe it is a good way when you are still a count, because the massive hit at reputation, prestige and piety doesn't harm you so much.

well negative piety is not desirable, no matter who you are .. as it makes you ripe for an excommunication, and the resulting grabbing of your title by half of Europe :)

But yes, Assasinations are not 50/50 ... and I don't think they should be. I believe it would have been hard to make undetected assasinations at a royal court back then.
