He had been well aware that his empire was the envy of other royalties, and he knew it was only a matter of time before some of them would try to grab a piece of the pie. His spies informed him that other nations were recruiting on a large scale and their shipyards kept busy around the clock. The planed campain to expand the tradecenter of Goa with other nearby provinces would have to wait until the hometurf was secured.
And so every ablebodied male that could be spared was reqruited and trained, and the spanish shipmakers preformed wonders in completing the most formidable fleet of galleys the world had yet seen. This is a fleet with the sole purpose of keeping the eastern Mediterranian free from hostiles, should the need arise.
Years passed, and the situation was yet in a standstill. This time was used to further enhance the colonies in America. The expantion in India was also set in motion, and soon a long strip of coast was under Spanish control.
Barely had the bodies been burried in India when the barrel of gunpowder that was the border between spain and the Netherlands finaly exploded. While Hollands troops marched towards the border, the fleets of Venice did their best to stage an assault upon the spanish mainland aswell as the islands nearby. It is ofcourse true that no one army can match the might of the spaniards, and the defending spanish forces quickly turned to offence. Likewise, the aforementioned fleet proceded to hunt down the venetian barkboats, and was victorious in several battles.
When the Venetian navy finally gave up and their armies instead marched over land to aid they partners in crime the sheer number of vile men was too much even for the spanish to keep the offence up. In the end it was decided that a small, unimportant piece of land that had been taken as a residual during the campain against portugal and it's french allies, was to be seceeded to Holland. The rest of the formerly french provinces where infused with a new sence of patriotism towards the spanish crown after experiencing what could have been under brief occupation by the netherlands, and thus the war was not really a loss but a wakeup call.
