At the Bottom of the World, A Nubia AAR

I always like playing as Nubia, but one thing *really* annoys me about them. Every single game I play, the kids are named exactly the same every single time.

So this time, I F12 die -d Georgios and Syragia, in order to play an entirely new character who didn't have the same kids over and over and over again.

Welcome to the chronicles of country-cousin Zayed and his line.

Zayed of Dongola, Part 1

Hi, I am Zayed of Dongola. The recently-legitimised half-brother of Georgios of Dongola, ex-King of Nubia. I say ex-King, because he and his wife Syragia committed suicide. Leaving my sorry behind as King of Nubia. I never expected it, so I never really bothered to apply myself in school. After all, I never expected to become more than a minor provincial baron.

I am 19 years old, and my entire life I have been referred to as bland in both skill and personality.

capture06082010154416.jpg

The first thing I did after becoming King of Nubia was to marry. Luckily, one of my courtiers, the 20-year-old Amira of Nobatae was unwed, and agreed to my proposal. She, too, is pretty useless, but this is Nubia, a tiny country surrounded by heathen Muslims, so I'll take what I can get.

capture06082010155727.jpg

With the wedding money I got for marrying Amira, I declared myself Prince of Aswan.

capture06082010154435.jpg

Oh, this is my working court. I think I got rather lucky with my Chancellor and Steward. Pity they are rediculously old, though.

capture06082010155804.jpg

Halfway through April, I have 18 Gold and a declaration of war. Honestly, the al-Murabitids are practically the other side of the world away.

capture06082010155837.jpg

In June, it came to my attention that the people of Aswan still practiced the Moslem faith, so of course I had to slaughter them.

capture06082010155844.jpg

I then gave full power in Aswan to the clergy. That'll sort them out in no time, for sure.

capture06082010155902.jpg

I attempt to create an alliance with my neighbour al-Mustansir, but he rejected me. I suppose I'm not much use to a King with such a large demense.

capture06082010155943.jpg

In July Chancellor Nada and Steward Elisabetha came to me with an argument. I told them to suck it up and keep away from each others stuff. Chancellor Nada seemed to become a bit haughty afterwards.

capture06082010155959.jpg

Solving problems between courtiers obviously got Amira hot under the collar, because in August she informed me that she was pregnant.

capture06082010160029.jpg

In October Chancellor Nada and Steward Elisabetha were fighting again. I told Nada she was a selfish cow and to stop fighting over Elisabetha's things. Nada declared Elisabetha as her arch-nemesis.

capture06082010160215.jpg

On New Years Eve, 1067, I recieved news that the Emirate of El-Arish had declared war on me. I ignored it. After all, the al-Murabitids *still* hadn't arrived in Nubia and they declared war on me in April!

capture06082010160238.jpg

El-Arish declined my peace proposal. Well, eff you, then.

capture06082010160250.jpg

The Shiekdom of Tripolitana declared war on me. Honestly, I get no love.

capture06082010160328.jpg

The Vangarian Guard offered their services, but 1 - they aren't Nubian, 2 - I have 24 Gold to my name, and 3 - I just plain don't trust a company calling themselves "vangarian". It sounds like a disease.

capture06082010160339.jpg

Tripolitana and El-Arish reject my peace proposal.

capture06082010160345.jpg

I decided to have my Spy-Master have his people infiltrate the El-Arish army and destroy it. They sank off the coast of Nubia county.

capture06082010160400.jpg

Apparently I was at war with the Shiek of Mallorca. My advisors suggested I use a diplomatic overture called the "Grigor Defence". Shiek Ayyub accepted immediately. I shall have to pen a letter of thanks to this county "Suenik", I believe it is called, for having come up with such an idea.

capture06082010160422.jpg

Amira bore me a daughter on May 17th, 1068. We have named her Anthelia. A strong Nubian name, even if I do keep mis-pronouncing it as "Ant-hell-ia".

capture06082010160437.jpg

I am 21 Gold in debt by June, and the state of my realm has started deteriorating.

Zirid declared war. Can't you lot find another Christian to fight, like Italy?

capture06082010160534.jpg

Chancellor Nada has become stressed, due to the, what is it now, 4? 5?, wars we are in. And also the fact that we are being beseiged by Tripolitana.

capture06082010160539.jpg

Nothing like a neighbouring province being assaulted to get Amira going. Women.

capture06082010160634.jpg

I employed the Grigor Defence several months of scrimping and scraping later, and Tripolitana accepted.

capture06082010160700.jpg

I am still at war with El-Arish and Zirid. ...when did I stop being at war with the al-Murabitids? Spy-Master, investigate! Oh, you say I Grigor Defenced them as soon as they sent me the war declaration? I can only assume I forgot due to my getting used to being King of Nubia.

capture06082010160729.jpg

Zirid finally reached Nubia, and rejected my Grigor Defence.

capture06082010160743.jpg

He agreed a few days later. I think he may be schizophrenic.

capture06082010160815.jpg

My second daughter was born on September 6 1069. She has been named a much shorter, girlier, easily pronouncable "Anna".

capture06082010160830.jpg

El-Arish accepted the Grigor Defence. Note to self, send another letter to Suenik praising their awesome.

capture06082010160853.jpg

Hammadid declared war barely two weeks into December.

capture06082010160906.jpg

In these few trying years of war declarations and Grigor Defences, my Amira has been steadfastly by my side. I cannot help but think she is the best thing since sliced bread, and vow my everlasting devotion to her alone.

capture06082010160911.jpg

Love declarations also get Amira hot to trot. I hope it's a boy this time.

capture06082010160916.jpg

Even Hammadid is succeptable to the Grigor Defence.

I send Anthelia to be raised by the nannies. They seem happy for something to do.

capture06082010161058.jpg

Sigh, I have another daughter, Maryam. I refused to let Amira name her Jam (which she craved her entire pregnancy) but added the "am" of Jam to Mary, the name I was going to give to my daughter.

capture06082010161215.jpg
capture06082010161228.jpg

In celebration of my third child, and daughter, I arrange the marriages of my Spy Master Feraki to my Chancellor Nada, and my Marshal Aaron to my Steward Elisabetha.

capture06082010161246.jpg

Anna is sent to the nannies. Maryam is taking up all of Amira's time at the moment, after all.

capture06082010161300.jpg

Marshal Aaron has been slinking about the court, accusing (for no discernable reason) random courtiers of doing various things.

capture06082010161348.jpg

Basileios of Sudan, one of my useless courtiers, has died at the ripe old age of 43.

capture06082010161426.jpg

Pregnancy has been so relaxing for Chancellor Nada that she is no longer stressed.

capture06082010161510.jpg

My local barons donate money to fix the crumbling economy and lawlessness of Nubia. Everybody says I am terribly modest about it all.

capture06082010161524.jpg

Modestly is also, apparently, one of Amira's fetishes.

capture06082010162040.jpg

Maryam is off to the nannies now. The rest of my girls are doing great, so I thought "Why not?"

capture06082010162053.jpg

On this day, September 12 1072, I have been given an heir. My son Markos, may you live long and gloriously.
