Chapter 25: Messy Mexico (1680-1690) New
Chapter 25: Messy Mexico (1680-1690)

The highlight of the last chapter was the adoption of Naval ideas to unlock the Supply Convoys Policy . It also featured expansion into distant lands like Korea and Mexico. It ended with war with Gurkanis, the largest remaining independent nation. A side peace in that war netted Denmark the province of Taiz in YEmen, which would eventually end up as part of Sheba.
1 yemen annexed.png

Then Denmark gained her latest Colonial Nation in America, in the region of Mexico . It was called Christian in honor of Christian the Great. This was clearly intended as retort to the very large French Louisiana next door.

2 christiana born.png

Considering the relative strength of France and Denmark, it would stand to reason that Christiana was going to surpass her neighbor. But , as we shall see, things can sometimes turn out in "paradoxical" ways.

Meanwhile, in the Gurkani war , Denmark knocked out Kilwa from the war, taking off a few provinces to Sudafrica.

3 kilwa peace.png

Slowly but surely , the once powerful Kilwa was being whittled down to nothing. Similarly, Gurkani ally Bengal lost land to Burma
4 benga.png

And finally, the great land annexation happened at the expense of Gurkani. Denmark annexed a large amount of land , which she transferred- after concentrating development in London - to her vassals Bactria and Sheba .
5 Gurkani peace.png

The peace resulted in Gurkani losing a lot of their coastline, with their last ports on the Persian Gulf being in the Mashriqi culture provinces . Since these were slated to go to Georgia eventually, they were not taken in this war yet. But having a diminishing Gurkani navy was going to facilitate future troop transport in times of war , particularly that the Suez canal was nearing completion .

Denmark took advantage of the peace to break vassalization with Otomo, triggering a 5-year truce. that means war for Kyoto could happen again in 1686 or so.

6 break Otomo.png

In addition to Denmark's rapid expansion thanks to her own efforts, she also benefited from the occasional successful war by a colonial nation. And in the case of Swedish Brazil, it was a nice stomping of Portuguese Brazil that took place.
7 swedish brazil grows.png

But those independent colonial wars were not always likely to succeed, and when Canada declared war on New Pangea, Denmark intervened to prevent loss of land by her subject.
8 canda enforced.png

During the peace lull, the annexation of Colonia was begun. Then war was declared on the next largest nation after Gurkani, namely Yue

9 DOW yue.png

It was obvious by then that Denmark's strategy in picking enemies was to go after the largest nation that did not have a truce [common strategy for world conquest]. And here it was convenient that Yue was allied to Korea whose lands Denmark wanted for herself, and also conveniently there were a lot of troops in Korea already .
While the Emperor's attention was focused on Asia, the integration of Colonia was completed, and Denmark gained a second CN in Mexico, confusingly named "Colonial Mexico". But that happy news was overtaken by the plight of Christiana, the first CN in Mexico.
10 christiana plight.png

You see, Christiana was born from former Aztec land after they were defeated by Denmark. That meant that the Aztecs did not have a truce with Christiana , and were free to declare a reconquest war on her. Which they did. But because Denmark had a truce with Aztec, the Emperor Christian could not Enforce a White Peace. And to declare war on Aztec, he had to break the truce, something he was loath to do . So , for now, all he could do was send monetary help to the beleaguered colony .

He then refocused his attention on Asia. And during the war with Yue, Naval ideas were completely adopted by Denmark.

11 supply convoyx.png

That had two salutary effects. First, it enabled Denmark to confirm her Thalassocracy, gaining another merchant. Second, and more importantly, it allowed adoption of the Supply Convoys policy. This immediately improved the liberty desire of Denmark's vassals , as predicted by Niels the Mad's calculations.

Christian's attention was then drawn yet again to the New World, where Canada declared war on New Sweden. And this time he was unable to Enforce Peace due to the New Swedes not having a great opinion of their indirect overlord [the automatic diplomat does not improve with subjects of subjects]. But at least he could help New Sweden by declaring war on Canada, who was not protected by a truce.

12 Dow canada.png

With all the might of the multiple colonial nations in the region ( I counted 6 - Newfoundland, Breton Canada, Pangean Canada, New Pangea, New Azorea, New Atlantis) , he did not need to pay attention to that war and he let the colonials handle it. And in a brief period of time, Canada was made to cede provinces to the various colonials

13 Canada partitioned.png

Back in Asia, the island of Formosa was unified under East Asia with the full annexation of Tungqing, and then Korea ceded her North East to Denmark, leaving only the southern areas independent, while Malay gained a couple of Khmer provinces and Eastasia gained a few Qi provinces.

14 Korea annexation.png

The annexation of so much land was costly in Diplomatic power, but enlarged Denmark herself quite a bit, keeping her growth on pace with that of her many vassals.
After that, yet again, the Emperor's attention was drawn to the New World, but this time with the dire news of the end of the Aztec-Christiana war with full annexation of Christian, and the sacrifice of its ruling family to the savage Nahuatl

15 christiana dead.png

The horror of that peace treaty shocked the sensibilities of the court in London. The proud Danish Empire - global, cosmopolitan, tolerant- was humiliated by heathen savages. Furthermore, seeing the name "Louisiana" emblazoned in large letters on the map with no Christiana next to it added insult to the injury. Emperor Christian almost declared a revenge war in anger, but then held his impulse and decided to wait for the truce to end. But he vowed that the Aztec empire will meet its demise sooner rather than later, even if it meant that all of it ended up under Colonial Mexico without the chance of cultural acceptance [with only one CN in Mexico, it is unlikely that most native cultures will get accepted]. And to take his mind off that debacle, he took a personal trip to Egypt to preside over inauguration of the Suez Canal, completed in May 1685, 11 years after it was commissioned.
16 suzez finished.png

And then he directed the diplomats to sign peace with Yue, taking land for his vassals Burma and Eastasia based on culture boundaries ( at this point, all land being given to Eastasia was Chinese culture group, as they were not anticipated to gain any more land outside their group being large already).
17 peace yue.png

During the peace lull, the Emperor considered creating a new successor state to Colonia ( to follow the lineage of Pangea-Azorea-Atlantis-Colonia). But decided against it to save on Diplomatic power. And besides, Denmark now had so many merchants from the Colonies that they outnumbered those from the Trade Companies. And so he resumed the strategy of declaring war on the largest nation not truce-bound . ANd that was Vijayanagar

18 Vijay war.png

That war was a bit difficult as it took time for armies to arrive and the Vijayanagaris had plenty of troops. And it saw the first use of the Suez Canal by the Danish military when the Atlantic fleet was summoned to transport troops to India and help the Indian ocean fleet fight the VJ navy.
19 war in india.png

Meanwhile the truces with Otomo and France expired, and that meant another war for Kyoto, and another war in Europe.

20 dow france.png

The aim of the war with France was to fully annex so as to gain their colonial nations. And in that endeavour, a problem was soon encountered.

21 France in mexico problem.png

France had two provinces in the heart of Mexico ( how they were able to annex those two , I am not sure). Denmark was unable to ask for them in a peace treaty due to being inaccessible for coring. And so, to get a path towards those two provinces , the Emperor decided to declare war on Portugal who had just gained some provinces themselves from Aztec. And one of those provinces separated Danish Colonial MExico from France's two Mexican provinces.

22 Kytoto.png

ANd while that war was started, the Otomo war was completed with the annexation of Kyoto . A new upgrade of the Imperial City netted Denmark enough diplomatic power to finally upgrade her diplomatic corps and obtain access to the Imperialism casus belli

23 imperialism.png

And the main benefits of this upgrade were to be the savings on diplomatic power, because recent peace treaties have been very costly as Denmark was annexing large numbers of provinces at a time thanks to high Absolutism. In addition, the Client State Act was now mostly superfluous and could be retired, further saving on diplomatic resources.
24 retiring client state act.png

As the decade grew to a close, the Emperor became a bit impatient with the wars. Vijayanagar was practically defeated, but he needed to finish all the wars simultaneously to be able to apportion provinces to vassals in peace time . And the French war could not be concluded before the Portuguese war. So he again took advantage of the Suez Canal and ordered the Atlantic fleet back to Iberia to speed up the siege of Lisboa, after which he was able to demand the key Mexican provinces from Portugal.

25 no cost barrage of lisboa.png

26 peace portugal.png

Denmark only took provinces in Mexico- there was not enough score to take more without prolonging the war. But those provinces were enough to allow the full annexation of France with the French Mexican provinces going to Colonial MExico, and the ones in France proper to Denmark ( and of course, Denmark took provinces from France's allies Milan, Cologne and Tuscany).
27 peace france.png

The full annexation of France meant that French Louisiana and French California and Cascadia all became direct possessions of the Danish crown, putting most of North America under Wittelsbach control.

This was followed by the annexation of a large swath of land from Vijayanagar, divvied up between India, Saurashtra and Bactria based on culture lines.
28 Vijay peace.png

The annexation of so much land was very, very costly in terms of diplomatic power. But hopefully, with Imperialism casus belli now available, such exorbitant costs will not be encountered going forward. And the first use of the new CB was against Japan, who had predictably accepted to buy Kyoto from Denmark .
29 dow japan.png

ANd the second use of that war was against the Aztec , in a war of revenge that should see most - if not all - of their Empire destroyed.
30 DOW Aztec.png

And those wars bring us to the end of the decade. As you can see from the dominion map, Denmark's growth is accelerating. ANd thanks to her policies geared towards keeping subjects in submission, she is facing no threats of revolts from her many vassals. Even large and recently acquired Louisiana is loyal.

I think that the Danish realm will be exempting Aztec (and only them) from the tolerant society...

If the emperor changes his mind (Arcadia? Mu?) maybe a chance to distribute cultures with a second CN in Mexico. I'm guessing vassalize an independent Mexico with their national ideas it too far fetched

Chapter 26: A Multicultural Empire(1690-1700) New
Chapter 26: A Multicultural Empire(1690-1700)

The last chapter saw Denmark continue her quest for worldwide domination with the addition of lands from many nations, particularly Gurkani, Canada, Korea and Yue. There was one setback when Aztec destroyed the colonial nation of Christiana. The last decade ended with a revenge war on Aztec and another war for Kyoto with Japan.

Japan was quick to conclude peace early in the new decade, transferring Kyoto yet again to Denmark.

1 kyoto again.png

The power gains from the re-upgrade of the Imperial city helped fill the hole that Denmark had dug in regard to diplomatic power ( due to annexing lands via the conquest casus belli). The peace with Japan was then quickly followed by a declaration of war on Hungary and her allies in Europe.

2 dow hungary.png

In that war, the Emperor counted mostly on the European personal unions to carry the fight, as a large portion of Denmark's troops were stationed in Asia. Meanwhile, in America, Aztec had completely succumbed to the Danish and colonial onslaught.

3 annex aztec.png

Revenge for the destruction of Christiana was exacted with full annexation of the Mesoamerican nation , fulfilling the wishes of the Emperor as well as many others:

Azteca delenda est!

Most of the annexed provinces automatically went to Colonial Mexico, with one going to French Louisiana.

Back in Europe, the consolidation of Italy under Sicily was continued with the annexation of Genoa , Lucca and Two Sicilies in side-treaties of the Hungarian war.

4 sicily grows.png

We were finally down to just one Sicily , and the confusion over who were the true Sicilians was resolved in favor of Denmark's subject.

The next Hungarian ally to sign a separate peace was Portugal, who was made to cede a lot of their Mexican holdings - land they had conquered from the Aztecs - to Denmark. But our educated ruler, having satisfied his desire for revenge, decided to heed this conciliatory advice

I disagree actually, the only way to show them the error of their ways is to treat them the same as every other culture.

They should be treated equally as an integrated part of the empire, wether they want it or not.

5 portuguese mexico gone.png

Denmark ended up splitting the new acquisition among several subjects instead of giving it all to Colonial Mexico. After all, most of the people of the newly conquered lands were not ethnic Aztecs , and it was unfair to lump them together with their former rulers in a large Colonial Mexico where they stood little chance of achieving accepted status . So they were split between Sweden, Spain , French Louisiana and Floride in a manner designed to maximize culture acceptance.

It was then time to deal with Hungary itself. And thanks to the benefits of Absolutism, the entire nation was annexed in one fell swoop.

6 hungary gone.png

With Denmark now at peace, the Hungarian provinces were then divided up between Bohemia and Bulgaria along culture lines. There was one exception, however, to the previously planned lines. Instead of having the Slovenian lands ( part of the South Slavic group) go to Bulgaria, they went to Bohemia who had a free culture slot. This was driven by the fact that Bulgaria refused to accept those provinces due to over-extension . In fact, Denmark had to hold Croatian provinces directly for a while until Bulgaria was able to accept them [unlike Client states, Personal Unions cannot be force fed over 100% OE] . A similar situation happened with the Dalmatian provinces which Denmark kept until Sicily could accept them.

With Hungary gone, Christian IV turned his attention to the far east again. After a quick sale of Kyoto ( to Ashikaga) he declared war on later Jin.

7 dow jin and sell kyoto.png

This was immediately followed by war on Ashikaga . And then to round out this batch of wars, the Rassids+ Ethiopia were targeted next.

8 dow rassids and ethiopia.png

The first war of this batch to end was Ashikaga, who ceded Kyoto again to Denmark . Another upgrade of the Imperial city was done for monarch points. Then Ethiopia signed a separate peace

9 ethiopia cedes land.png

Denmark kept for herself several Egyptian provinces, giving the remainder to Sheba ( although just like in Bulgaria's case, Denmark had to temporarily hold on to some provinces due to Sheban over-extension)[see Footnote]. The reason Egypt was kept under direct Danish control was its strategic location at the junction of two continents and its proximity to Europe thanks to the Mediterranean and the Suez canal. That allowed efficient troop and mercenary recruitment there, and its developed provinces made it an ideal place to station reserve troops in peace time. Plus there was no designated Levantine group subject, so accepting Egyptian into Denmark meant one less culture to worry about .

The Rassids were then fully annexed, with all their lands going to Sheba who already accepted Bedouin and Yemeni cultures.
10 rassids to Sheba.png

Finally, Later Jin made peace, closing this round of wars.

11 jin peace.png

Its provinces were transferred to Rohan and Eastasia based on culture lines ( but again not all could be given due to over-extension in the client states). But before all the transfers were effected, Christian IV imitated his Great predecessor by first moving the capital to a smaller city, this time Kent, and then concentrating development there.

12 capital move and yemen.png

Surprisingly, it was the Rassid provinces in mountainous and arid Yemen that yielded the most benefit. It appeared that the Rassids - who had ruled that area since the 1400's - had invested a lot of monarch power in developing their land. And now Denmark was harvesting the benefits.

With Denmark at peace, Kyoto was sold back to Japan . And then another batch of wars was started. These were against Songhai in Africa, Gascony in Europe, and Huron in America.

13 new wars.png

And the Emperor was thinking this would be the last batch of wars before the new decade , which he hoped would start with Enlightenment spawning in Europe ( as a 6/6/6 monarch with many provinces with Universities, he certainly had good reason to expect that). But alas, our Christian IV the Educated would not live to see the new Century, for he died on October 13, 1695 from food poisoning. He was sixty one years old , and had ruled Denmark for 41 years ( since the abdication of his father, Christian III the Greedy ) . Our late ruler had hoped that changing Capitals was the secret to longevity, but that did not completely pan out for him.

14 christian V.png

The burden of leading Denmark's vast realms then fell to his son Christian V 5/2/3. Realizing quickly his lack of diplomatic skills, he decided to fully commit Denmark to the Humanist Path which promised to make him a much better diplomat. After hiring a theologian, and clearing all provinces of rebels, he proclaimed the mission Mulicultural Empire completed

15 HUmanist path.png

16 christian V 553.png

With improved diplomatic skills, all Christian V had to do match his illustrious ancestors was take a few trips to Kyoto, and he promptly declared war on Japan . Meanwhile, the various wars were starting to wrap up . First was Egypt who gave Cairo to Denmark and one other province to Nigeria

17 egypt out.png

Then it was Huron who ceded land to New Azorea, New Atlantis and new Colonia.

18 huron peace.png

Then Japan ceded Kyoto and our Emperor took the trip to improve his skills to 6/6/4.
19 kyotot upgrade.png

Then Gascony and Tuscany ceded land to Spain , Denmark and Sicily
20 Gascony peace.png
.

Finally, the war in Africa ended with Nigeria annexing Songhai and Dagomba culture lands.

21 NIgeria grows.png

Now for most of these annexations, Denmark took the provinces directly, then gave to vassals in peace-time. Thanks to Imperialism, this saved a lot of diplomatic power. And also gave Denmark a chance to concentrate development into the Capital Kent, which reached the unusually large size of 65, significantly higher than Zeeland's size .
22 Denmark cities.png

The growth of Kent relegated Sjaelland, the largest Danish culture city, to sixth place. The cosmopolitan nature of Denmark's Empire could not have been more obvious with the top five provinces consisting of two English , one Dutch and two Korean cities. And in a further nod to multiculturalism, Egyptian was officially accepted into the Danish realm as an equal culture, and the former Trade Company lands in Egypt were turned into States.

23 egypt stated.png

One side effect of that was the loss of one merchant, bringing the total from a peak of 28, down to 27 . The Danish economy barely felt that, with no one bothering to see where the merchant was previously stationed. And to stress that Denmark was now a truly Multicultural Humanist Empire, the Emperor announced that he personally identified as a Catholic and a Ruthenian!!

24 ruthenia christian.png

Surely the events that led to that were recorded somewhere [in the 100s of screenshots I took ], but to bring that up was considered "backwards" in the enlightened Danish court. Rather , what people were encouraged to look forward to was the day when the entire world would be part of this Empire. And to that end , the next war was proclaimed on Gurkani , whose truce from 15 years ago had run out

25 DOW Gurkani.png

The Gurkanis were at the time in the process of clobbering the pathetic remnants of the Ottoman Empire. And that meant the Danish army could quickly take on the bulk of Gurkani troops in Anatolia.

26 malatya defeat.png

And although the initial encounter at Malatya ended in defeat, it effectively tied up the Gurkani forces and led to their homeland's invasion from multiple directions . Meanwhile another Kyoto war was undertaken against Otomo, who had become a tributary of Japan and who was sold Kyoto during the last peace lull.
27 another kyoto war.png

And when that war finished a year later with the conquest of Kyoto, Christian V did another pilgrimage to the Imperial City to earn his next military skill "degree" .

28 christian 665.png

He was now only one more trip away from the exalted 6/6/6 status. And he had been on the throne of Denmark for barely 4 years!

The last year of the decade saw the end of the Gurkani war with Denmark annexing a vast amount of land. That was split among her subjects Georgia, Bactria , Saurashtra and Sheba based on culture lines.

29 peace gurkanis.png

The decade was now almost over. But there was time for two more actions. First, the diplomats of Denmark approached the Japanese , saying "Hey, we have a bridge province to sell you !" . Second, an old front that had been dormant for centuries was reactivated , as war on Kazan was declared.

30 dow kazan.png

A few month later , a new century began. But it began with great disappointment, as the institution of Enlightenment was granted to Air, a small province in the Sahara, instead of the highly developed and educated Denmark who had a University built in every province.

31 en;ightenment.png

We close with the dominion map showing more than half the globe pledging Allegiance to the "Danish" Emperor.

32 status.png

Footnote: In many instances in this decade, Denmark had to keep provinces temporarily , taking on over-extension , because her vassals were at 100% OE and could not accept. In the case of the Client States, I could have force fed them using the province interface. ANd in fact I did that to India in the previous chapter with many Vijayanagari provinces. But that caused them endless rebellions that I had to baby sit with my own armies. So I decided it was better for Denmark to take up to 200% over-extension temporarily, rather than have subjects enter debt and rebellion spirals.

A few quick notes

* we are nearing the end of the run. Over 20K development is under Denmark . I estimate another 10K to conquer. Two or 3 chapters more, unless truces become an issue. But no doubt the World Conquest will succeed.

* I popped the HUmanist Branch missions now to quickly upgrade my ruler. I thought about saving it for later. But I already have one card in reserve, and that is Golden Era. I thought using up the Humanist Branch now would give my young(ish) ruler time to reap the benefits.

* Once I conquer the entire world, I will have Denmark return most wrong culture provinces in Asia and Africa to the client states. Will need to see how we keep Denmark's economy prosperous without the trade companies. Might need coal and its Goods produced bonuses to pull that off ( or might not).

* I am undecided on whether I will spend effort and years on stripping Poland from her trade company provinces in Polish Mashriq ( and Spain similarly in Guinea). these are all wrong culture ( because they are trade companies) . I can do that by "losing" a war to a local power and then regaining the land and giving it the clients. It is tedious, but would help make more of the world culturally accepted. on the other hand, maybe having a bit of "hot spot problems" due to history is more realistic ( e.g real world today and the legacy of 18th and 19th century history on world conflict zones).

Very few rebels . Between Humanist ideas , high religious tolerance and no wrong cultures , the only rebellions I see are those that spawn from "Separatist SEntiment" event, the random event you get when you have over 100% OE. But those are small and I have plenty of troops to deal with them .

Chapter 27: Getting Strict (1700-1710) New
Chapter 27: Getting Strict (1700-1710)

We left the last decade at war with Kazan . We open the new decade with a second war on another old enemy, the Ottomans.

1 dow ottomas.png

And continuing the custom of having batches of wars in threes or fours, Isleta in the New World was soon declared upon with the aim of finalizing the borders of Northern Mexico.
2 dow isleta.png

That last war finished first, and the native American nation was partitioned between Swedish Mexico, New Spain and Spanish California, trying to keep native tribes together as much as possible. This was followed by the renaming of Colonial Mexico to Christiana , in honor of the defunct former colonial nation and Christian I, II, III, IV and V .
3 isleta peace.png

There was finally a large Christiana to stand side by side with French Louisiana.

The next war to end was the Ottomans. After annexing their allies Urbino and Antemoro, the Ottomans were kicked out of Anatolia and exiled to the islands of Oceania. They were also made to lose some provinces to the colonial nations of Patagonia and Tierra Austral.

4 peace ottomasn.png

The Middle East provinces went mostly to Pontus who was the designated holder of Turkish and Syrian culture lands, including the Holy City of Jerusalem.

Finally , peace with Kazan was concluded with full annexation

5 kazan peace.png

The Uralic provinces ( originally Perm in 1444) went to Karelia, as did the Novgorodian provinces. The Kazani culture provinces went to Ryazan. As for the remainder, mostly Bashkir and Siberian , they went to the new Client State of Siberia, founded in Iglino at the very edge of Europe. With a primary cultre of Siberian in the Tatar group, this new state was intended to expand East into Siberia and Southwest into the lands of Nogai and Kazakh people . Emperor Christian felt comfortable with the creation of a new Client State because soon enough he was able to alleviate the burden on diplomatic resources by passing Denmark's 11th ( and last) government reform. By opting for legislative houses, Denmark did not have to spend resources on her second Diplomatic policy , and those resource were diverted to support the new Client State.

6 last reform.png

Encouraged by the large gains against Kazan and Ottomans, the Emperor then eagerly declared war on Yue in late 1701

7 dow yue and korea.png

IN that war, he first focused on attacking Korea. The Koreans put up a fierce fight, but could not resist the unrelenting onslaught of Danish forces. After their forts fell to siege and barrage, they put up a last brave stand on land and sea.

8 battles of korea.png

With their fleet and army destroyed they were forced to ceded much of what was left of their land, except for a single province at the extreme southwest of the peninsula.

The newly acquired provinces were then quickly cored and turned into states.

As for Yue, they quickly surrendered after the defeat of their ally and were split in half .
9 Yue peace.png

Their Tibetans provinces were designated for annexation to Burma, while the bulk of their Han culture provinces were designated for Eastasia. But because of over-extension among the subjects, only a portion of the provinces ended up being transferred. And Denmark had to hold on to a large number temporarily .
10 uncored provinces.png

At the time Denmark was also still holding Anatolian provinces meant for Pontus, and Somali provinces meant for Sheba. This much over-extension caused a rise in unrest in the realm, and soon rumblings of a looming disaster pitting the Court against the Country were heard.
11 court and country begins.png

But that did not discourage our Emperor from starting a fresh set of wars, this time against Portugal , Vijayanagar and Ayutthaya. He picked those enemies based on the subject states that he anticipated would be receiving the land ( mainly Spain, India and Malay) . Those states were not dealing with a lot of over-extension and he hoped they would be able to accept the land after the war.

12 new set of wars.png

And he rounded up that batch with another war for Kyoto, this time against Japan.

The various wars would end up being long, brutal and messy and cost a lot of manpower. While his generals and subjects dealt with that, Emperor Christian focused on putting his realm in better order. In 1705, he took advantage of an excellent minister to change the Government reform dealing with the nobility. He rescinded the "Curtail Noble Privileges" reform passed back in the 1400s by Christian the Great ( to get the Danish Absolutism mission). In its place, he instituted a "Compromise with the Nobility " which would help the internal stability of the Kingdom ( something that could come in handy in case of truce breaks).
13 change noble privileges.png

And as Emperor Christian turned 50 years old, his strict personality began to show. He ordered the generals to maintain better discipline in the armed forces, and used a Theologian advisor to reduce unrest in the home provinces and stop the Court and Country disaster from blowing up.

14 strict emperor.png

This was then followed by the annexation of Ayutthaya directly into the Malay client state.

15 ayutthaya.png

Peace with Japan came soon after. But instead of the customary annexation of just Kyoto, the now strict Emperor imposed a harsher peace, taking maximum land.

16 Japan peace.png

IN addition to Kyoto, Denmark took most of the Saigoku culture provinces ( since that culture was already accepted). The Togoku culture lands of Northern Honshu were given to Rohan via direct occupation transfer, so the latter could not complain about over-extension . And then he made the last pilgrimage to Kyoto to reach the 6/6/6 status.

With plenty of monarch power already, our Emperor told his entourage that the next upgrade of Kyoto would probably happen in the reign of his son Christian VI. And as such, there was no downside to the extended truce with Japan.

He followed that with annexation of Nubian culture provinces from Ethiopia

These provinces were slated to go to Sheba, who still had two culture slots available.
He then negotiated one of the most complicated treaties in history [of eu4] with the Portuguese

The Emperor and his map designers spent a lot of time trying to figure out what to do with Portugal's many colonies in the New World. There was no perfect way to divide them up into colonial nations that accepted the many native cultures , and so sometimes a cleaner map line was sought ( like three Portuguese culture provinces from Lavrador going to Newfoundland). Sometimes, native cultures were already accepted by a Danish colonial nations, and so were directly transferred ( New Atlantis got a Powhatan culture province and New Colonia got a Yamasee culture province, both being accepted in their respective states). In the case of Colonial Brazil, where Denmark wanted to hold on to Bahia and its Great Project, land was split between a Swedish colonial nation ( Swedish Brazil) and Spain - who was expected to create Spanish Brazil. Similarly in Colombia where Denmark wanted to hold on to Cartagena De Indias monument, provinces were given to Spain ( to create a new colonial nation) while others were meant for Sweden ( but here the clerks in charge of drafting the treaty made an error, as we shall see). In the case of the La Plata colonial region, where Denmark had no great projects, provinces were directly transferred to Patagonia. Finally, Portuguese provinces in Iberia were naturally given to Spain who now controlled the entire peninsula.

After that complex peace treaty, the negotiations with Vijayanagar were a breeze. Pretty much everything was designated for India.

With Denmark at peace, it was now time to actually transfer the provinces to the subjects. Denmark's administration was severely over-extended [518%] and so this had to be done without delay . But again the vassals complained about their over-extension. Spain was able to take Portugal proper and the Colombian provinces ( which caused little over-extension) but balked at accepting the Brazilian provinces. India was able to take just a fraction of the land annexed from Vijayanagar. IN addition, Rohan , Eastasia and Sheba still had provinces assigned to them that they did not accept.

21 overestension is a number.png

And that was not the only problem that Denmark encountered. Recall that Denmark took many provinces from Portuguese Colombia, with half going to Spain and the other half slated for Swedish Colombia. But the clerks responsible for the peace drafting forgot that Swedish Colombia was not a direct vassal of Denmark and therefore would not accept land in a direct transfer. As a result, Denmark was stuck with provinces in the New World she did not want. So the Emperor decided to go ahead and core 5 provinces in the Colombia region which would create a colonial nation for Denmark, but would cost Denmark the Cartagena De Indias monument. But before that happened, he tried to make lemonade out of lemons by starting the work on the Panama Canal.

The strict Emperor then summoned all his Client State ambassadors and told them in no uncertain terms that Denmark was done taking the brunt of the over-extension , and that they had to accept the conquered provinces whether they liked it or not. He then ordered a direct transfer of every province to its designated Client State by going straight to the local administrators and bypassing the bureaucracy in the client Capitals [I used the province interface]

The Emperor's strict instructions resulted in Denmark's over-extension becoming a manageable burden [66%], due mostly to the Korean provinces . And it led to the vassals growing very large, with Eastasia exceeding the 1,000 development mark. But that did not affect their loyalty much and Christian kept a solid grip on his minions.

It was now time for another batch of wars. For that, the Emperor picked relatively easy targets as many of Denmark's armies were expected to be doing rebel suppression duty in the severely over-extended subjects. The targets were therefore the Papacy in Europe, Timbutku in west Africa and Kitara in East Africa. And the intended recipients of the various provinces were going to be Sicily, Nigeria and Sudafrica respectively.

But the Emperor decided to mix things up a bit this time around when it came to a side peace with Jolof, allied to Timbuktu. Instead of taking land from them, he took the opportunity to force Spain to cede her Jolofian provinces to the African nation. He explained to the Spaniards that he was going to strictly adhere to the culture lines, and subjects who held wrong culture land would have to fall in line.

The Emperor's desire for cultural acceptance came at a cost however . First, the court in Spain was very upset. But despite the relations hit, there was no danger of losing the Personal Union.

SEcond, the concessions to Jolof ended Denmark's role as hegemon, a role she would not be able to resume for another 20 years.

But despite losing the subject liberty bonus [-20%] associated with hegemony , Denmark still had all her minions very loyal, with only Louisiana expressing the tiniest bit of desire for freedom [4%]. Hopefully, that would not drastically change in the upcoming age of Revolutions , until Denmark gets new tools to keep her subjects at bay . That left the increased monarch power costs as the main penalty of losing hegemony. Certainly if hegemony is regained in twenty years, it should not be lost again. And if Denmark needed to give any concessions in war to outside nations, those needed to happen before 1727.

Now back to the wars .

The first one to end was with Kitara, who lost just 2 provinces due to inability of Sudafrica to core directly across Lake Victoria.

Next was the papacy.

Denmark gained land in Germany from the papal ally Cologne, and also gained development for the Capital Kent by stripping Rome from many valuables accumulated by the Popes over the centuries. At 76 development, Kent was by far the largest city in the world at the time.

Finally, peace was made with Timbuktu.

Just like the peace with Kitara, Denmark was unable to take as much land as she wanted due to coring limitations . Eventually, this problem will be resolved in the Age of Revolution with the Unrestricted Conquest ability. But the Emperor was not going to wait for that, and he kept on expanding his realm with more wars, this time against Busoga in Africa ( intended recipient Sudafrica) and Pagarruyung in Sumatra ( intended recipient Malay).

And despite the presence of bad omens in the sky, he was still very hopeful for a successful decade to come which opened with the embracing of Enlightenment on January 2nd, 1710 at the very affordable ( for Denmark) cost of 21,000 ducats and change.

These clerks need to be fired immediately!

I heard that OE is just a number... but what a number

Since the emperor asked nicely...

Agreed that the thing that hurt the most from losing Hegemon is the increase power cost, nothing major, but 20 years? ouch indeed

Bureaucrats ruining an otherwise perfectly fine plan yet again. Tsk tsk tsk.
