Well i just tested a game in SP in CORE 0.85. I spically tried out the new cags in fleet battles.

I had 4 Carriers, 3 crappy BBs, 3 CA & 2 DD. I had an air wing of 12 Cags on board. I engaged a fleet of 6BBs and the rest CA's. My fleet smashed the enemy fleet sinking all ships. The CAGs proved to that they are worth the investment if you have cairrers and fighting a large ocean war Eg USA and Japan. My Air defence on the CAGs was 11 at the time and proved to be able to hold of Basic fighters and kicked the crap out of Naval bombers when they tried to attack my fleet. It is only 1939 so the cags can get alot better yet, maybe to good. I would hate to engage a fleet with carriers and cags with no fleet air arm of my own after what i just saw. Makes carriers alot more useful.

I also tried using my cags offensively. I bombarded some ships in port where i could find them and sank a few ships with each attack. So even port attacks are alot better. Attacking to another sea zone also porved very useful with ships sunk once again.

Carriers have a high sea defence so if you have a few Good BB's and a few smaller escourts to take the hits, your CAGS will sink the enemy fleet befor to much damage is done. For me to sink a fleet of 6 BB and 6 CA with only losing 3 CA and 2 DD, thats very good odds. My carriers except for one were only minor damage and the BB's had minor damage as well. I would love to sea to fleets of carriers engage with both having CAGs what a good fight that would be.

Im my books this opens up a whole new part of the game. You can use carriers as they were supposed to be used.

P.S there are new airstacking rules. Any airstack over 4 starts to recieve air penalities. SO it is possible for smaller stacks to defeat larger ones due to penalities. Which makes sence, its alot harder to organsie 1200 planes then its for 400. I think this is also to promote smaller sir engagments and more of them on all fronts. Over all i really like the adjustments, plus CORE loads up in about 6-7 seconds now instead of the minute wait like normal.

Im very impressed and have already removed 0.83 not going back to that crap after seeing this.

Yeah, AI isn't affected by the penalties, but humans are. So everyone is in the same boat...
 
Ok. Patching to 0.85 myself. If anyone is on line 8pm tonight, I'd be keen to try and load up a game to make sure we iron out some of the normal teething problems.

One new event for Germany, when you reclaim the rhineland there is now a second part to the event. If you select the top option of out of the two, Fracne can DOW on Germany. Now this is a valid option but you end up being at war up to 6 months early, and with France only not the UK and the CW. So i just thought i would make yous aware of this incase it occurs in our game.

Hehe i tried out some interesting strategies with Germany on how to beat a Soviet Union (joel). And well one of them turned out to be very succesful, i had more tech and units then ive ever seen with Germany. Would at least be an equal of Joels teched up huge Russian land army. Hehe but im keeping this to myself.
 
Had a test run and Itlay and Germany now get resource techs for free which help ease the conversion ratio burden. Cant remember getting these in .83

Btw Mike your first preference is taken and Joel wants to play the Germans so unless he doesnt feel confident with them you got your 3rd choice the UK :)
 
Well, I don't have to play Germany, but I wanted to test out my theories on defeating the Soviets.

The biggest question is who we play as the 7th, and potentially 8th nation

Aside from Germany, Italy, Japan, Soviet Union, USA and UK, the other choices aren't so clear.

I would nominate either France, Australia, Canada or China. With an 8th player, a balance of a 4th Axis would seem reasonable, with either Romania or Hungary as the only real options I can see.
 
7th and 8th would have to be China and France I suppose with fallbacks to Cananda or Australia if they fall. I suppose we have to look at the tech lends to Italy in that case. Core .85 gives Italy the resource techs and a few others cant remember getting in .83
We may have to have a discussion before the game when we see what sort of numbers we have.
 
I want Germany :)

8 players has the potential for a disaster - I'm not really keen on it.....
 
Just been playtesting Germany and I notice the free techs and docs you get for spain are random. Sometimes you dont always get what you expect. Also I tried going to 1939 without teching basic tanks and just my luck I didnt get the Czh tanks techs event. Also if you run your supplies down to zero you dissent increases rapidily.
 
Well i think Omni you should go Russia, and Joel Germany and have a good fight there. I would have liked to go Italy (thought we were all swaping sides, Allies to axis and axis to allies). But if i have to go UK again then so be it, i know JH wants to go US again as he never got to fight with them last game which is fair enough.

As for minor nations. I think one should be France as this would help the UK be able defend alittle better and slow the Germans up and make it a real fight for France. After France goes then Canada or Australia for that player. For an axis player i would think Romania would be best, as they could be built into a powerful ally, which could make a real difference esipaclly in the med.

One thing though if we have another axis player, then potenialy they will also take over countries when there not in the General war fully. Like Romania could take out Bulgaria or even try on Turkey. Just something for us to think about, i think it will add to the game a new dimention. Cya 9pm Tonight.
 
Well my list of countries are:

1. Germany
2. Russia

If Joel insists on taking Germany, I'll take Russia.
 
Thats a good idea Jh. I think we should set some limit though like, if china hasnt been tacken by say 1939, then that player should swap to Canada or Australia and let the AI handle china as we dont wont to weaken Japan to much. The only draw back is be prepared then for a slow pre-war game as both human players in Japan and china will be fighting a war that could last years. This is normaly why we like china over quickly as it slows the game up greatly.

Maybe the best idea is we say China cant be attacked until 37 like history, there by tacking one year of Japans control of china and IC & Resources in our games. This should reduce Japans strength a little but not to much, and then we can leave the players in either Romania, Australia, Canada or France.

One idea i had was that a Human player could take Poland from the Start of the game and then we he falls transfer to france, then when France falls trasfer to Canada or Australia. Would be a fun game for that player fighting all those wars, might be interested in doing that myself for something of a change. Would be a different game. I also like the Idea of going france for a game from the begging and seeing if i can hold up germany for awhile to make it more realistic. I might check franceo ut today see what i can do with them. Mike I thought your effort last game with the UK might encourage you to take them again. I am currently running thru all major countries see what freebie techs they get before the war. I tend to waste IC on techs i get for free. Anyways I got a mortgage on Italy :)

Ok, well with all this discussion on which player takes which nation, I'm ok to change if needs be.

As always, my favourite nation is the USSR which I'm always keen to play. The question is, do you all mind if I do play them again?

I have a few different things in mind to shake things up a little, and get me out of my comfort zone with them.

That being said, I am also keen to try Germany again - perhaps if not this game then the following... Failing either of these two nations, I would prefer Japan or the USA.
