tldr: Update and pay $5 for the new event content, it’s totally worth it. Start a new game!
Played four or five hours last night on PS5 and I’m really impressed.
I first put in around 100 hours in early 2024 with the Chapter 1 content and while I never had a lot of the save issues and crashes experienced by a lot of folks, it was still rough around the edges graphically (portrait and map detail glitches), a lot of event repetition would emerge, AI decision logic didn’t always make sense, and tooltips were not great. But I was able to play the Iberian content to completion without too many problems and generally had good history-nerd fun with the game.
As for the current state of game, I was at first underwhelmed that the new content was just event expansion, but I’m happy to say that clearly a lot more has been improved than just that. Even as a long-time veteran of CK2 I still find some game mechanics inscrutable on occasion, but I’m happy to say the tooltips seem to have been extensively overhauled to add clarity. Not just in terms of content, but clarity of language. They just read better, and make more sense. There’s a balance somewhere between “this specific choice will result in this specific thing” and “if you do this, something might happen” and the text is definitely a lot closer. Events feel more organic and less repetitive, although that might feel different in another 100 hours. Game speed feels way better, and the new top speed is extremely welcome. Portraits are way less janky (I haven’t seen the no-eyes thing, sounds creepy though). The map details seem fixed.
I played tons of CK2 on PC, and some of the console-specific UI challenges are still present and annoying (I’m thinking of event windows popping under info panels that can’t be closed or moved, specifically). There is one class of pop-up window that appears with a blurry, too-small font. There were some inconsistencies with tooltips depending on window contents. I was not able to use military AI when being raided, the AI just immediately disbanded my armies. This was annoying when I was intending to clean up some raiders after a war concluded but found my armies had all been sent home. No crashes though, and saves were fine.
I really hope that these improvements are indicative of the new partner. If so, things potentially look really good for the future of the game. I’ve never regretted all the money I’ve shoveled at Paradox over the years, but I’ve been a little sad about how slow CK3 has been expanded on console. If we start seeing regular content addition and refinement at a similar level as this most recent patch and content, I think a lot of people, even the crabby ones, will feel good about it.
Hope the dozen or so folks that read this find it helpful. I generally don’t write massive reviews of anything, but I love grand strategy, and I’ve adored the CK franchise since the first time I played. Cheers!
