Bad Save Games???

Hi,

I was playing a game as the US. I stopped as normal, no CTD, and left the game for a few hours. I came back, restarted the PC, went into HOI and selected the savegame I was playing. It would start to load, then CTD. I tried it again, same thing. Then, I tried the Autosave, and it does the same thing. Oddly, the other older save games, load up fine.
The only difference between the game I am playing and the save games is that I am playing on the hardest settings. I am also playing as the US and other games are Italy and Germany. This is on a two month old PC with no other troubles and XP Pro. I am using an unmodded version of 1.05B.
Please help, I don't want to lose that saved game. It is precious to me.
 
So many different things that it could be. You could take a look through your save game file and see if anything is obviously wrong.
So you only have two saves of that game, the Auto save and one manual save that you made? In other words you started a new game and only saved it once at the end of your first session, then it crashed when you went to play it a second time?

No, I had saved that game several times with no trouble. Then out of the blue, it won't load. I do have on mod though, I did that trick of changing the start year to 1935. Other than that, nothing.
 
So do the earlier saves still load then?

Yes, but I had only saved this game under one savename and under Autosave and neither will load. Am I sunk then? There is no mod. Only 1.05B To do the 1935 thing I simply have gone into the game files and change the start year to 1935.

similar problem

I was playing a 1939 germany game. Just took France and wiped out the Brit navy/airforce at the same time. Next day, I tried to load and it froze loading the scenario. I tried to use the savegame utility but it didn't seem to help. I had saved and loaded this game several times previously with no problems.

P4 1.6
512 MB RAM DDR 336
win2k
nVidia GEForce 4 128 MB (latest drivers)
SB 512

Looking on Task Manager after it has frozen, CPU usage is maxxed out, memory usage remains constant and low and HOI is 'not responding'.

Does an earlier save work?
Have you renamed your AVI folder to AVI_back?
Are you using 1.05C?
 
They were saved on top of each other.

No I have not (yet) renamed the avi directory.

This was my first game with 1.05c

Oddly enough, this might be related. I have taken the Dutch, The Belgians and the French. The Vichy event has happened but I still can't annex or puppet the Netherlands, the Belgians or Luxemburg. I control every inch of all three countrys.

Do you have DI available? Have you taken the non-European provinces of Netherlands and Belgium? You can't puppet or annex with just the European provinces. Make sure (using the ledger) that they don't control any other provinces you aren't aware of.
 
follow up

avi renamed to avi-backup

After trying one more time, I finally got error messages, which sadly weren't saved. There were three in the .cfg file listing errors in line XXXXX. I tried to open the cfg in notepad and got nothing useful :)

I'm assuming I'm screwed. Sucks too. I was in a sweet place in the game. The game I've started since has not been anywhere near as fun.

Where did you see the error messages exactly? If they referred to line numbers those are probably line numbers in the .eug savegame file.
 
You could also try the savegame utility which can be found in the Bug forum.
 
I had this happen to me and I edited my saved game to remove about 2000 lines of in game messages from the saved game, it worked. (previous error hanging on load) I had lots of messages from aircraft arrival and departure for my auto bombing of retreating stacks of russians. (you retreat, and you die!)
