At the very least I would assume Damascus is in. Personally that is the city I most wish to see sacked by a crusader... though I guess a Mongol would do if it had to come to it.

why would be exluded? It was one of the most famous cities of Ck time period.

Yes, it is in. By 1066 it is bigger than Cordoba, richer than Genoa or Novgorod, greater than Alexandria. It is third after Constantinople and Venice.

Bah, and what about Brugge...;) :D

Well, the Duke mentioned Genoa, Novgorod, Gordoba and Alexandria.

I guess many citiens in Italy were really rich and populous during those times - Milan, Naples, Rome? Paris was probably great too. Kiev? Major Hansa cities? What about middle-east? Marrakech? Damascus? Al-Quahirah?

Don't forget Cordova.

That 'screenshot' must have had more analytical effort devoted to it than any photo since the Cuban Missile Crisis.

i think the swedes are building a dock in the bay of [censored]. please inform the King that we are sending our carracks to blockade the harbour and land our knights in case of further offensive acts by the Hansa fleet. :D

Milan-Yes very rich and powerful, but not at its height(later medieval age)

Naples-Under Byzantine Rule I believe(correct me though) not as rich or powerful until 14th-15th Century

Rome-Center of Western Church, under Papal Rule, but there are noble families in the city, not as great as 5-6 centuries earlier, but being restored....

Paris-still only a minor city

Kiev-Big in Eastern Europe, not noticed outside of that region

The Hansa wasn't in full swing yet, and most of Northern Germany was still Pagan and not yet part of the HRE, so small towns that will be great centers of Commerce

Middle East never heard of those but Damascus, someone please explain...

I was a bit suprised at venice as 2nd greatest since i thought that city wasnt quite up to swing in 1066 yet.. but maybe its my amateur history skills that arnt :)

Oh well.

Any way, maybe..

4. Alexandria
5. Genoa
6. Cordoba
7. Novgorod
8. Kiev
9. Damascus

Rome, maybe a bit too ruined still..
Zaragosa should be worth something.. but maybe it was just a medium level city.

Was London any good?
(certainly biggest around since the conqueror was crowned there, but worldwise?)

And Avignion, wasnt that the french centra at the time?

Others... Cairo was certainly rich too. But its real gold age came around 13th c iirc.
