Setting - Normal, player is Germany vs. AI
Type - action reports only (not much storyline)
Note - This is my first decent attempt to play GER and attack SOV
1.06 with no mods

August, 1939
In March, the British decide to let Poland die, and thus Poland is not Allied. This allows the Third Riech to plan the war on its own schedule. Poland is conquered after the M-R Pact with the Soviets. Germany thus did not have to face a two-front war. It takes 20 days to conquer Poland.

In Sep. '39, Germany finishes some land doctrine tech and thinks about France. The Soviets are busy declaring war on the three small Baltic states. Eventually, in Nov. 39, the Winter War starts between Finns and SOV. Germany declares war in Belgium and Lux, but Allies react (as expected). France is conqured within a month, but Vichy takes a little longer than desired. Germany sets up to handle 20+ Allied units near Grenoble (added note, they were in Toulon). Luxembourg is annexed.

In the beginning of 1940, Germany attacks first Denmark and then Norway. The Danes are annexed while Norway is made puppet. Many NOR div's dot the coast of Norway, reinforced with a few Wehrmacht units. Shipments of steel are 'stolen' from Oslo and sent to Lublin (on occasion, not much of that to be honest ... I kinda felt it was sorta like cheating.) The Allies try and land at Oslo several times but are defeated.

Meanwhile, Adm. Raeder complains to Hitler that the German Naval forces are weak. NOTHING has been done for the Navy! The German High Command is informed, "Nothing shall be done ... until we own Moscow!". Raeder chews on it ... he is not even getting subs at this time.

The Luftwaffe is strong, but needs more up to date equipment and training. They eventually receive most of what they want.

The Wehrmacht is very strong and well-trained. The Chief of Staff is quite pleased.

Yugoslavia joins the axis in March of 1940 but soon changes sides. Germany obliges by annxing them. Croatia is created, adding 2 INF-arty and 1 INF div, plus 15 manpower, to Germany. Meanwhile, Latvia finally succombs to Russian attacks and is annexed by the Soviets.

1940 closes with more German units on the Soviet border than imaginable. The SOV are still stalled in Lithuania, and have not made an attack in Finland for a while. The Finnish War is drawn to a close in late 1940, but Stalin insists on diplomatically claiming a small strip of land bordering Norway. German units start marching up the coast of Norway, "Just in case they are needed."

North Africa is quiet since the Italians have been allowed to remain neutral (along with Hungary, Romania and Bulgaria. Germany, Slovakia and Vichy are the only Axis at this time.) A few German corps of infantry are placed into North Africa after Franco (Spain) allows German access and Gibralter falls to a well-organized mountain corps. The Allies start their 50+ attempts to amphibous land at Casablanca. Eventually, in late 1941, a small armored corps (2 panzers, 1 mech inf) is placed in Casablanca to help stop the Allies.

In early 1941, Germany prepares for - BARBAROSSA

1941

Germany is prepared. New equipment reaches the units for the operation. There are five Panzer corps, each with 3 panzer div. and 3 mech. inf divs. (one more Pz corps forming ... due to the rain delay it was available making a total pf 6 Pz corps). Following is a total of the units for Barbarossa:

LAND
144 INF (+1 INF in Memel as a holding force)
9 Motorized
6 Pz IV/80mm
6 Pz V/80mm
3 Tiger I/90mm
3 Pz II/120mm
6 Mech-Inf/arty
6 Mech-Inf/AT
6 Mech-Inf/Eng

AIR
9 Junkers 88 TAC
5 Hienkel 111 TAC
10 Messerschmidt 410-A1 Dive
5 Junkers 87D Stuka Dive
21 Focke-Wolfe 190A-4 Fighters

The USA joins the Allies in late 1940. This forces Germany to bring Italy, Hungary, Romania and Bulgaria into the Axis. Not much happens except that the Italians, all by themselves, take Port Said. Suez changes hands a few times. (Germany controls Vichy/Hungary/Slovakia armies, the rest are AI).

Therefore, there are a few Axis Minor divisions and units available for the assault on Russia. The minors are used to hold provs that the GER corps launch assaults from. Other units are in the West, but those listed above were the totals for the Assault on Russia.

War against SOV

War is declared by GER on SOV on June 20, 1941. May and early June saw a large weather front move through over Europe, and the German High Command decided to wait for clear weather for the air units.

Contact is made by German front line panzers around June 27/28. Russian defenses quickly crumble. The German INF units move up. Pockets are created by cutting off the Russian escape routes. Eventually, even the Pripet Marshes were surrounded.

Pockets and the Russians trapped within (all would eventually surrender)
Riga area - 28 SOV divs
near Kuanas - 10 divs
Pripet - 88 (!)
NW of Odessa - 24

The German offensive slowed due to the large number of units needed to surround and eventually clear the swamps. This took several months.

Phase Two

After the Pripet Marshes were secured, the German offensive, fueled by a few more units (and only a few more), began again. This was Phase Two of the invasion.

More attacks, deep into Russia, cut off more Soviet defenders.
near Bryansk - 12 divs
Moscow - 19 divs (encircled on Nov. 25, 1941)

By this time, Russia was down to ~140 INF divisions. They were hurting. The German High Command was perplexed since the Soviets had no armor!

Phase Three - mop up

Phase Three was anti-climatic. With so few Russian defenders, and no armor support, the Red Army was in dire straits. To make matters worse for the defenders, the Luftwaffe had pretty much cleared the skies of Red Army air assets. Stalin had lost much industry, as well.

The Murmansk Peninsula was cut off from the rest of Russia on 11:00 December 9. Another 18 Russian divisions were trapped there.

Southeast of Tichvin, another 11 SOV divs were cutoff. German Panzers made a quick and decisive journey to Baku. Several Red Army divs were in the mountains on the Turkish border, but the main oil fields of the Caucasus were in German hands.

By June of 1942, all main objectives had been taken. Stalin refused to give in. The German High Command mopped up by taking the rest of the Baku area and, along with Finland (now in the war), the entire Murmansk peninsula. Also, a few more provinces were taken on the main front.

Bitter Peace and On To England!

The Japanese declared war on the Allies in mid-1942. They did not join the Axis until after the Soviets had made a seperate peace with the Axis.

Stalin sued for peace in early December of 1942. The Red Army was a shambles. Germany was prepared for the next phase of operations and on May 6, 1943, invaded the Isle of Britain. England was quickly overrun.

Currently, I am not certain if I will finish this game. My options are A) Invade America B) finish the techs and Nuke America. I might play it through just to try the nuclear and super-advanced air unit stuff out. I once tried to attack the SOV before, as GER, but lacked INF. Thing is, the Blue Division, along with the 333/334/335 divs, were actually near available when Barbarossa was historical. So, unless a player has 200-220 INF divs as GER, they do not have the historical setup. 220 is a little high, but are needed for all those extra places. (The AI will attempt to land on the French Coast at beaches many, many times).

Oops - forgot, Italy DoW'd Greece in early 1942. GER got the annex. (just used GER TP's based at Marsailles since I did not have paradrop stuff until early '43)

Of course, this was on Normal level, but I figured I'd post and share :)

Nice.

What was your tech advantage??

Well, it was on normal difficulty, and I did not build mega-INF with Extras, mostly just INF (FM's would have a max of 3-4 INF+extra), Therefore ...

My tech was awesome. I had 3 Panzer II 120mm div's just before Barbarossa, and Land Tech was great. I did not have super tanks, but my Infantry was past the Advanced C3I. I had SubMG, and may have had the improved infantry weapons. (advanced magATmines and advanced infantry weapons). Also, land doctrines for INF/ARM were finished. btw, I think Tiger I's are neat to have but not worth building, heh. (too slow).

I think I might try a) SOV on normal or b) GER on hard. dunno. I've played USA/ENG/GER/SOV/JAP so far, mainly with 1.05 and 1.05c. 1.06 works well, but AI needs more attack units. At least, this game they had few. USA has some tho...

Final Thoughts

btw -
In the early years, I only upgrade the air, and not all of it. Some of the air became Improved instead of Basic. Usually, only the Austrian Ftrs get upgraded so that their ORG goes up when I research air docts.

For land, I leave the 3 Pz I MG's for LONG time un-upgraded (and under Ltg. von Arnim). They don't get upgraded until mid-1941/2. In 1943, I am still using the Pz IV 80mm's and would change the Tiger I's into Pz V 120mm's.

I did not build subs. I am now building a few. I found that going after the UK with improved subs is A) too easy to sink the Royal Navy with good subs and B) management nightmare moving the subs all the time and C) it seemed in 1.05 that UK had a lot of convoy ships (might be less in 1.06 although there is an AI event that gives AI 200 free convoy ships I saw).

V1 and V2 were used before the UK landings. Kinda nice, that V2.

I did run out of manpower taking the UK. I lost 3 INF in London from the assault and used a bunch to reinforce losses. Does not matter since I have 335 total land units atm, and 12-15 more coming, along with 8 Advanced Naval Bombers. Also, the manpower goes up ... I think I have about 90 now. However, I need ships and such for taking on Fortress America. USA has 100 INF, 60 MechINF, and 20 armor, as well as a bigger fleet ... they have been at war for almost 3 years now. I might just go ahead and invade tho, since Japan can't hold out forever. I have 36 TP and 6 subs added to what is left of original GER naval assets. (I have lost one BB and one CA so far).

We'll see if I finish this game. I like the challenge of the early game. Now, it is 'only a matter of time'. Heh, forgot to mention ... Japan owns 2/3rds of India. :)

Still, well done. My Barbarossa seems less like an invasion and more like an ass-whooping of biblical proportions. And by that I mean that the AI usually kicks my ass from the Pripet Marshes all the way to the English Channel. And then some more. I'm exaggerating a bit [okay, quite a bit] but still you make it look easy.

Danke/Domo arigato/Thank you for the nice statement :)

My new SOV game is not loading :(
I think it is because of 1.06 "Poles Fold". Every save after July 41 is not loading now. Argh, I am off-thread, kinda bummed, my new SOV position was player=SOV (me), Hard/Agressive. I was looking forward to a challenge. I guess I can go back to JUL 30 41 and nail the GER AI

On a side note, I was just playing as SOV in very hard/aggressive. Darnit, if this game is too easy! Jerries barely took border provs .... thing is, with less IC, less resources, and tech costing nearly double, it will be 1-2 years before I can take Poland since I am just now expanding past 9 armor/9 mechinf. Too bad the GER AI can't push me back to Moscow :(

Nice report :)
Was Fun reading and well written.

You should try the core-mod someday. Makes the game much more interesting and challengeing. A whole new game really. I enjoyed the vanilla game very much but i LOVE the game with core-mod installed :)

Aye, I should try C.O.R.E. I have been waiting for their updates to settle in, but it looks like they may have it better. :)
