Summary

Barony of Arun should instead be barony of Arundel

Description

On the basis that other holdings are named after the relevant settlements, the barony of Arun should be renamed barony of Arundel. The Arun is the name given today to the river that runs through the town, which was actually usually known as the Arundel river (after the town) in Medieval times. Arun is also the name of the modern local government district that was formed in 1974. Arundel is the name of the town itself as well as the castle, famous for its role in the opening stages of the war between King Stephen and Matilda.

Sources:

The Doomsday Book (1086) contains a reference to ‘Harundel’, being the settlement of Arundel:

The Oxford Dictionary of British Place Names by A.D. Mills (2003) contains the Old English etymology for the name Arundel and states that the river name Arun is a ‘back-formation’ from the place name Arundel:

A History of the County of Sussex: Volume 5, Part 1 (1997) sets out the history of the settlement of Arundel and its castle, and explains that the Arun river was normally referred to as the river of Arundel, the Arundel river or the high steam of Arundel in medieval times, with the modern name ‘Arun’ first recorded in 1577:

History of Arundel Castle on town website:

Arundel is also referred to by that name in Henry of Huntingdon’s Historia Anglorum (12th century).
