Please explain your issue is in as much detail as possible.
That's what I get when I get the customization phase completed and try to move on. Game has only been out less than 1.5 hours, and I doubt my callsign (is that what it means by "profile"?) is already taken. But, ok, go to my #2, a variation that would absolutely not be already taken, as it has too much character randomization.

Same response.

Fine, a third...an abbreviation of my call sign.

Same...again, no way all three variations of this callsign are already taken, especially when one would be partially randomized.

Apparently I just cannot play this game at launch.

Steps to reproduce the issue
Customization:
1- choose crest
2 - choose three colors
3 - press Save

Same problem... I even Kickstarted the game... very disappointing!
 
I had the same problem - among others. The fix I found:
I killed the game in Task Manager. When I launched it again, I got into the main menu directly.
It does say that my account is in Offline mode, but it seems to work fine.
 
I eventually could log in but when I do my callsign is wrong?!!? How do I fix/change it?
 
Same problem, with the additional problem of not being able to exit that screen. I'm stuck in a loop of trying to select call sign, saving, being told user has profile then trying to leave the screen via the back ward chevrons in the upper left of the screen and then being told to enter a call sign. I have to use task manager to shut down Battletech in order to get out of that screen and play the game (without being signed in). Now I'm getting a notification that I can't reach the server when I try to sign in with my paradox credentials.
 
Same issue. I killed the task, then reopened, and it dropped me into the main menu where I was able to add my paradox details again and it loaded the heraldry etc.

I assume this might be a situation that the first time you hit save the paradox servers couldn't handle it cause they are getting hammered. But with no way out, couldn't save, couldn't exit without "entering a callsign" it was screwed.
 
Same problem here as well. I validated the Steam files, then restarted and now i'm getting an error "We're sorry, there was an unspecified error in establishing your connection to Comstar. Please try again later."
 
Yep, did the usual Steam file validation - no change. Exited Steam and re-launched Steam with 'Run As Administrator' (don't ask why this makes a difference with some games) - also no change. I will not play this game until I reserve my call sign that I've been using since 1998.
 
Similar situation here. First time picking my callsign, etc. I got the error: "We're sorry, there was an unspecified error in establishing your connection to Comstar. Please try again later." The next time I tried to do it I got the error "user already have a profile for battletech".
I was able to shut down the game and when I restarted was able to get into the single-player campaign. For now I'll opt for patience and try again later.
