Any tip on winning this battle if you are at the beginning of Book 2 ?

I have tried in and got completely trounced...

It’s likely that “Ghosts in the mist” is the first quest where you have to defeat a ghost army, I know it’s not easy.

You need to know that their units have a special aura which causes damages while your soldiers are fighting with them. It means that you need as many magic resistances as possible. It comes from some kinds of artifacts and from defending spells. There are some designers in the office who divide their army before the battle and leave their archers in safe but I use them against the Shades (they are also effective a bit against the Spectre units). Be careful, you have to defend them, especially from the Soul Hunters!

I hope it helps. :)

Excellent advice from Linda. Basically, expect your "regular" units, especially those with low hps, to be beat up pretty bad, as their magical attacks ignore armor. On the offence, rely on magic, "big units" (giants, sidhe ...) heroes, and ranged attacks (however most of the shadow units are more or less light cavalry, so expect flanking and protect your archers well : don't hesitate to turtle up in a defensive position, near a map border). For defense, as Linda said, focus on magic resistance, and don't expect your usually reliable heavies to shine.

I don't remember exactly if it happens with ghost in the mist, but against most ghost-like armies, you'll suffer from a negative weather effect, that will help the enemy army and probably hinder you (fog mainly, or night). Using a daylight spell can help you a lot.

If the battle is really too problematic, know that the autoresolve function is generally relatively favorable against ghost armies (they have a low number of troops and many light cavalry-types, and the "ghost" type advantage is downplayed a bit by the autoresolve mechanic), especially if you replace archers by "fodder" anti cavalry infantry units (like spears).

O my, this is completely exploiting the game. I just lost massively playing the battle, with 4 heroes on my side and only heavy units, I reloaded, use Autobattle, and only have light casualties (6 men/units) now. :p
