One line summary of your issue
Crew chatter bug on Surround sound

What platform are you running the game on?

Steam

What operating system do you use?
Win 10
What version are you running?
1.2.1-345

Please explain your issue is in as much detail as possible.
The Background Crew chatter in the Argo / Leopard does NOT play unless you are using "Stereo" setting on your PC's default Sound settings.

You get a Comm-Bleep then Silence, then a Comm-Bleep

Steps to reproduce the issue
Enable Surround Sound on your PC, Quadrophonic, 5.1 etc Wait for Background chatter, Or Leave a System

(The main way to see if this works, is the Docking speech wont play. As mentioned you'll get a Comm-bleep, silence then comm-bleep.)

Attach DxDiag (PC) or System Info (Mac)

Attach Output Log

I have the exact same problem (no crew chatter in the Argo / Leopard or PA announcements) on Linux even with stereo output. So I don't even have a workaround like you.
Turning on 5.1 and playing around with channel mapping did nothing.
Because of that I think this is an ingame bug, and not an OS audio issue, and using Stereo on Windows "fixes" it only by coincidence.

Can we have a real fix?

Yes totally a bug. This is a Unity game and all others Unity games I played don't have this problem even without surround support.

It doesn't seem a fix is incoming, this issue has been ignored for a long time, not even an acknowledgment from the devs that they are aware of the issue..

As I have stated previously, the Devs read the bug reports submitted; however, that does not mean a bug report will get a reply even if it's being worked on. If they need to reply some reason they will post. Until then, please stop lamenting that there isn't one. It's not helpful.

Same issue, my 5.1 setup works fine with everything else.

I even have working mechwarrior chatter, despite it playing on center channel just like argo chatter does, yet one of these works and the other doesn't.

We will see in the next patch, they fixed a lot of stuff last time. Sadly they patch the game not as often as I'd like, maybe because of the DLCs, but we can wait, no problem with that!

I had Argo chatter play once yesterday. Literally once out of who knows how many dozens. I'm not sure if there's one specific sample that isn't bugged, or if the chatter has like a 0.1% chance of actually working correctly on surround sound.

It does seem like there probably isn't a major issue to be resolved there, since I finally heard something play at least once.

This is always the same one: "people are working outside the ship" or something like that. And there is an other one when living a planet.

Oh yes, it was exactly this one. I think that might be the single argo chatter sample that actually works.

Yes! But why? Mystery, mystery...

And sometimes when leaving a planet you can hear one (not living, silly me), if I remember well.
The rest of the game is working fine with the surround configuration, when you shoot missiles and you hear coming from the back, that's so good!
We just need to wait for a fix.

Yep, it has been three years but the bug is still there. Man, the devs can't seem to get a hold of the audio problems this game has.
It's almost assuredly not going to get fixed since development has been over since early 2020.
