Is it really necessary to reinvent the wheel ? Stellaris has been the only game from PDS so far where i didn't have major issues playing MP (no desync etc.). Only issues I had were performance (slow end game) related and happen in SP as well.
Sorry, it is. We have to look forward and make sure our future games are even better :) These changes are on a lower level than the gameplay ones, so they shouldn't change too much, let us know if you find any issues.

I am hosting a game now.
Hotjoining is extremely fast. Time to join has reduced by 70-80%. Great job on that!

Now, adding players is a bit difficult. I sent a request to my friend and he had to click 20-30 times in order to add me. Accept friend request may be bugged so take a second look at it.

Even though we are now playing the game, he appears as offline. This is definitely a bug. We can chat, but it still says offline.

Also, it would be nice if you added this feature:

So, everytime I try to join, it says game not found, but when I hosted a game an hour ago, people joined and played with me...
Hi!

Yes, it's a bug that has been logged. He was likely added the first time but the UI didn't update. The online presence should work if you restart Stellaris.

Good suggestion! Thanks for the report.

So, I updated, booted it up, wasn't prompted to fill in any username or such, even set a nickname, perhaps since i'm already linked, I can find only one game which is someone with 1/32 slots, but cannot join, and upon hosting a game, no-one else joins, So i'm wondering if i did it right? I'm running 1.7

Hi!

Yeah, it's most likely due to your account already being linked. I would guess that you're doing everything right, it's probably just too few people testing right now. I will try to get some people from our end to host some games during tomorrow.

Thanks for testing. We appreciate it!

No problem, I have a second bug I need to go test now, someone complained about on the Steam forums, Engineering Strategic resources not being available for research.

Yay bug testing~

Hi all!

We just updated the 1.7 beta branch (Bradbury) with 1.7.1 to get some further data on the networking layer. You will likely have to restart Steam in order to get the new update.

If you're testing, make sure that it says version 1.7.1 in the bottom left corner of the main screen when running Stellaris.

I also wanted to take the opportunity to thank all of you for helping out with the testing. During tomorrow we will try to get a few people from here to host games just to make sure there's something running that you can join.

Thank you all!

We have a bugtracker internally, and we add bugs we find in the forums, they aren't not getting ignored.

You need a public facing bug tracker that players can submit bugs to. First it's a waste of your time crawling through the forum for bugs and adding them to an internal tracker and second there is no way for us to know whether or not you've actually noticed a bug post and added it. The forum is a terrible system for bug reporting.

At the very least you should be responding to every single bug report in the forum. Yes I realize that's probably not feasible which is why you need a real bug tracker.

I cant even seems to join servers "game not found..running Bardbury 1.7.1 (8482)..simply says Game not found tested 20 times different servers with status: "starting" and "running".

I also reported in bugforum:

Creating new hostgame it wont connect to my steam userID even thou i long time ago connected paradox account to steam(worked perfectly other versions up to 1.6.x)
simply says Username(Host)
Stellaris.online seems not able to start server with server ID either...since the serverID you get in Bradbury 1.7.1 is " 9dbf628f-0d87-4214-6f96-7195a59e1e21"..what is that lol

Well with this new MP system could we maybe get some sort of host migration system of any sort. Like spending like a while ingame and host DC kinda ruins it all. Like an option for the remaning players to contiune the game letting someone else thats playing contiune to host it once the original host DC would be verry nice feature.

Is the plan to eventually force players to login to a Paradox account to play multiplayer for the live release? Absolutely awful idea if so
Yes, we know it's a extra step, but we need a method to authenticate the players. It's hopefully not too much of an effort to create an account, and the next build will have an easier create account screen. Also, If you link your paradox account to your steam account, login should happen automatically.
What is the reason for authenticating via a Paradox account?
The steam API already allows for user authentication using their steam account. Is there things that cannot be done with the Steam API calls?

Hi all!

As you may know, it’s been a busy few years for Paradox; with new games being released all of the time, on various different distribution platforms. So, just like Stellaris, it’s time to look to the future!

In order to give our fans the best Multiplayer experience possible, and to (hypothetically) facilitate people using different distribution platforms being able to play together, we have some new tech we’d love you to try out!

Starting today there will be a special Stellaris beta branch you can download which will allow you to be the first to try-out our new Multiplayer tech. The branch in question will show up as “bradbury_beta”; it’s basically 1.6.1, but using our new multiplayer system (Once installed it should read as version "1.7" in-game). We’d really love for those of you who play Multiplayer to get involved in the test and be a part of shaping the final product!

In order to take part you’ll need to have a Paradox Account, you can actually connect it directly to Steam to save having to login again in the future! Just follow the instructions in-game.

Bugs can be brought to our attention at our bug reporting forum here.

Things we’d love for you to report on in particular are the following:

  • Hardware/Firewall issues.

  • Issues connecting to games.

  • Issues with hosting games.

  • Please also let us know should any issues with linking PDX/Steam accounts.

The hope is though that you shouldn’t notice any difference at all to how things are today!

How to Opt Into the Beta

NOTE
: Please log out from the splash/launcher for first time you play the Multiplayer beta (should you be logged in already). Should you have already linked your Paradox Account with your Steam account you will not get prompted to do so again.

Right-click Stellaris in your Steam library and click “Properties”. In the new window that opens go to the “Betas” tab, select bradbury_beta from the dropdown menu at the top. A small update will be performed and then you are good to go!

  • You’ll need a Paradox Account. If you have yet to create one this could be made easier by connecting your Steam Account to your Paradox Account (just click here to create one).

  • Next, you need to select a nickname, this will be part of your Paradox Account, so make it a good one!

  • When playing Stellaris with the new multiplayer functionality you will be able to add friends and chat directly.

We are really excited to get the ball rolling with this, it’s a first step towards what we hope will be plenty of cool features to come!

Oh, and how could we forget! As a little “deal sweetener” those who assist in the beta will receive this little cutie as an in-game portrait before everybody else:

Interesting, but I would have prefered a new shipset instead.

So. 1.6.1 was made into 1.7.1 - this does not show me my friend list as clicking on the new symbol does exactly nothing. (going back to 1.6 and updating again to 1.7.1) Being asked to join another's friendlist does not do anything either. Since you deactivated server IDs for 1.7.1 I cannot play in multiplayer anymore if I want to use 1.6/1.6.1 content.

This has ruined my evening quite a bit. I have nothing against betas and not working betas but why did you have to overwrite 1.6.1?

*Sigh* Another earth animal portrait (Mantis Shrimp) called an "alien" portrait... It's getting annoying. At last it is free and don't look too bad.

These are exactly my thoughts about this new protrait.

1.6.1 beta was released, not overwritten. You do not have to opt into any beta to play 1.6.1.

Soooo, just tried with a friend. We can add each other as friends and chat, but we do appear as offline to the other person.

However, while I am seeing the nickname he has chosen, he only sees a very long number for me. In my friends list my name is correct though.
.
I see the same thing. It will show online when you are in a game in MP the long string only shows from the main screen from what I have seen thus far.
