Long story short: what is the better branch to play MP right now? 1.6.1 or 1.7 ??
if you also want a total players opinion, imho 1.7.1 is still better in mp, simply because we only had one desync so far in countless games, some of them over multiple sessions, one even - as i fell asleep while others continued - over almost 20 hours without any issues;
hotjoin filetransfer is also really fast, generally the game usually runs better, and so far even mods work
It kinda totally changes the feeling, if you can just hop in into some game, play a while as guest, and since therefore you can also easier play larger maps with initially less people; well if you are a corvette spammer who likes to end games quickly, that might not be so cool.

downsides are no steam join, some people having issues with getting their game found, and if you are behind a router with someone else, and none of you are hosting, one either has to use a vpn, or hope it works.

I am not sure, how both are mechanically different (balance hotfixes in 1.6.x), would be interesting to know. but I guess since Krille's statement says use 1.6.1 for "proper" games, they might differ.
i would not allow people to hotjoin in a running session in 1.6 line, generally it however works fine to continue a savegame with a closed group, if everybody hotjoins right at load.

Thanks for response!
I just want to play some friendly game with colegues from work. So small, closed game with everyone joining at same time. I think we will try 1.6.1 at first and revert to 1.7 if we encounter some problems.

When you say "Those that assist in the game beta will get access to a portrait early" does this mean those who downloaded the beta or those who found bugs? What if i downloaded the beta and didn't encounter a single bug? Will I still get access to the portrait?

Well, the portrait is a bug, so you have to encounter at least one.

Still haven;t been able to join or create a game since the beta patch.
In 1.6 that still works fine. Hope they'll fix my problems. Can't be the only one?
When creating a game the light just keeps burning red, when trying to get a unique game ID and no active games can be listed.

Hi Myrath!

Would it be possible for you to run the game with the full log command as outlined in the original post? It's likely that you are behind a restricted firewall and either enabling UPnP or forwarding ports would fix the problem, but if you could send the logs that would help us trouble shoot.

So i've been playing on and off with a friend online. We've been doing the same game for over a week now between work and life, and so far we haven't hit any bugs. I will say it feels like it is playing a bit smoother on my computer, which is a bit older and sometimes has issues with multiplayer games on the larger maps.

Hi!

1.6.1 is the latest stable release. If you want to play a "proper" long running game you should use that one. The 1.7 is a beta branch and while we would really appreciate if you try that one as well there may be bugs which you should be aware of. However, If you try 1.7 it will give us more data to improve the new MP system with.

I wouldn't call 1.6.1 a stable release, far from it. If it wasn't for this multiplayer update there would be a 1.6.x patch that might be stable, but we won't be getting that until you finish this update that will do nothing to fix the game. The current "stable" version of Stellaris is 1.5.1 and even that is a stretch.

Just out of curiosity, I have friends that refuse to play the beta and I have to toggle between the beta and not in order to play with them. How long is beta expected to run for so that I am not accidentley opted out when it is too late for this bad boy portrait?

For a while I am sure. Because if they change the tag from beta to release then they would have to start working on the actual bug fixing patch which they already postponed for almost a month with various reasons. Obviously they do not want to work that hard, so they would continue pretending the MP is being tested.

Hard to say, but usually the company has a summer vacation in July** so it might be just before it.

**those Swedes and their funny "enriched life" ideas.

wait, so why don't I have the skin? I thought my paradox and steam accounts were already linked. I'm automatically logged in every time anyway. Is it a window that should be popping up when I am in the main game menu that I'm not getting?

open your ports, the beta uses other ports as it doenst use the steam ones:
port 17780-17800 should be enough. Fritzbox users should allow auto port opening for stellaris.

Thanks Daywalker!

You are correct. Enabling UPnP should be the first step and if you can't or doesn't want to then opening ports manually is the best way. It's actually fewer ports that are strictly required. Opening 17780-17785 should be enough :)

So, just downloading and playing the Beta gets you the portrait? I'm mostly playing it so my Xenophile Robophiles don't lose their shit because my robots are technically slaves, but the portrait is a nice extra I don't want to miss out on.

I'll be honest. I don't like this. Not at all. Having to sign-up and make a new account (giving data away) just to play multiplayer from now on hurt the paradox brand for me. I don't buy the shrimp bribe and the other reasons since you could make signing-up optional for further community functions or something without forcing everybody to sign-up. Well now we can argue that some other game might do that too. First of all, that does not make it any better for the consumer. But more importantly, I and others bought the game when there was no sign of having to sign-up in the future. So at the end we have to take the loss of a core functionality of the game if we don't want to sign-up. This is anti-consumer at its finest and just left a bad taste in my mouth for the paradox brand, even tough I love your games and your teams.

reason for edit: obvious fuck-up, wrote anti-consumerism instead of anti-consumer

Hit a bug with the UI. Screenshots capture it, and here's the save file.

Sadly still experiencing the error, where with no mods and only the DLC enabled, when trying to connect (or even find for that matter) a friends game, the message "Host has a different version of the game" comes up, and sure enough, when I rescan the servers, I see his game with a different checksum, than mine (d30b) and I have a220. Troube is, he on his part still has a220. Both of us have tried to do a clean reinstall and still no luck.
One of the times I saw that another player joined the lobby but immediately disconnected, but my firend and I could not join.

(tried to get the log file, but sadly my windows cmd skills are ailing me)
