Beginners question

Hello everyone,

So I am new to the age of wonders game and I would like some tips about the ranking in the game. I didn't manage to find nothing related to my question.

The thing is, how do I keep myself even to the CPU capability and army? I've been playing several games in the normal difficulty and after some rounds I am the last place with 2 colonies and a small army.

Usually I try to research the colonizer tech first and try to expand as far as the game let me, but it looks like I'm missing some key points to increase my capability.

Can someone give me some tips on how to improve this point of my game ?

Well i am curious myself how this ranking works. You can be last in the ranking and still steamroll enemy. Army with 2 stacks before turn 10 can destroy AI on normal difficulty, and then you jump
quickly in the ranking.

I'm fairly certain that the ranking shows % completion of Victory Progress (whatever they're called) quests. You can be leading in tech and military and still be behind AIs who happen to have more quests done.
