We are looking for modders to help out, so please let me know if you're interested in history modding!
I hadn't actually planned it this way, but this Dev Diary seems to be very appropriate for Independence Day, since we're talking about Ireland. While Ireland had been partially under the Anglo-Norman yoke for centuries by 1400, things were changing. A Gaelic resurgence was welling up as English influence waned. The Anglo-Norman possessions splintered into smaller entities, leaving behind a much less formidable opponent for the Irish chieftains, while they themselves adopted new strategies to better deal with their English enemies.
Within Ireland there are three groups of people: the native Irish chieftains, the Anglo-Irish lords, and the King of England himself, who personally owns the Pale.
Irish Chieftains
The Irish Chieftains still maintain control over a large area of the island, but they are disparate and divided. That said, they will be willing to aid their fellow Irishmen against the English in both offensive and defensive wars. However, as the player, you will be able to unite the Irish lords under your rule to strengthen your fight against the English. This will be a more difficult version of the "tutorial" 1066 start, since a lot of Ireland is already under English control, meaning there are fewer easy pickings to expand your rule. You may have to rely on cooperation and collaboration with your fellow chieftains more than you would usually, before you can confidently take on the English yourself. If you manage to unite Ireland, perhaps the circle will be complete?
Anglo-Irish Lords
The Anglo-Irish lords are vassals of the king, and are responsible for preserving (and expanding) English rule in Ireland, although some are more Irish than English (and more Irish than the Irish themselves?) Under your careful guidance, English influence in Ireland may be reasserted, becoming a highly valuable asset to the English Crown. Alternatively, you might instead decide to forsake English rule, delcaring yourself independent either alongside the other Irish, or having seized control of the island yourself. These men walk the line between the Crown and the Celts. Where do your loyalties lie?
In terms of unique mechanics, this area doesn't exactly present a huge array of opportunities. It's classic CK2. Alliances, intrigue, strategic warfare, you name it. However, rest assured that there will be plenty of flavour! Creating an independent Anglo-Irish Kingdom of Ireland will, for example, have different events from a native Irish chief uniting Ireland under an Irish Crown. Completely conquering Ireland as the King of England will bring about a new age of strengthened English rule, but the Irish, though defeated, are never out of the game! Expect fierce resistance, and perhaps aid from Celtish brethren from further afield...
That brings today's Dev Diary to a close- it was a bit shorter than usual, but I was quite busy today. Happy Independence Day to those of you in the US, and I hope you look forward to liberating your Irish allies a few centuries earlier when you get your hands on Beginning of the End! Next week, we'll venture off the European continent for the first time, into Northern Africa, to take a look at the Muslim kingdoms along the north coast.
