I know I'm new to CK-DV and it looks like the highwater point of CK was around '06-'07, so what is the current state of the game?

I saw the threads talking of a CK2 is that a real possibility or is CK in the decline of number of players? The inability to get a copy of "Gratianu's" CoA's which looked to be very well recieved does not bode well for jumping on the CK bandwagon late.

I'm enjoying CKDV quite a bit playing hours on end and wish I had found the game years ago. :(

I'd say the game is still surprisingly alive compared to it's age, so you're not too late at all. Modding is still going on(look at the new map mods being made), the AAR forum is as busy as ever and there's still activity on the main Crusader Kings board.

CK's greatest failure is kind of an odd one: It had an amazing amount of potential and delivered on most of it.

If CK had been given a 2nd expansion pack, it probably would have been the best of the original engine's games.

Cannot *wait* to see a CK2 on the new engine.

The concept of a CK2 with the new engine does make you drool, doesn't it?

The game is great with so many levels you can play it on: it's fun so not "too old" to play at all. I like that I don't have to micromanage the economy /advancements which is what kept me from playing later Civ titles.

I meant more in the way of the community overall. I've played games & been on forums when a game has been at it's beginning, highpoint & endin where the level of player involvment has dropped off significantly including posts, mods & general interest.

CK seems to be humming along with all the currrent posts, probably nothing like it used to be but stil active (thankfully!). Players seem to be hungry for CK2 and major updates which would most likely kick CK interest back into high gear - now that would be NICE!

The forum (and generally all PIs forums) have been active all through the life of the game. There have been some "dead" periods when nothing much happened on the main board. But I think when PI have been doing their promotions (like the 50% off in the 200K week) makes lots of people buy some of the older titles, which are then very cheap, and that sparks new life in the forums as the new players come in to ask questions.

Also the whole PI Convention, where many hoped/assumed/demanded that CK2 would be announced, that also sparked a renewed interest in the old game ... both for new players and people who had played it years ago and forgotten about it.

Now people are closely watching what happens with Vicky2 ... if that is a successful game, the chances are much higher that the next game announced will be CK2. ... and we are nearing launch day for V2 fast :D

I only got on the CK wagon myself about half a year ago, but man, I do not regret it.

When you finally "get" the game -- because there is a steep learning curve -- CK just starts to shine. The idea behind it is so original its quite refreshing, and offers a nice relief from the staple of RTS and FPS games.

It's only after putting in considerable amount of time that some of the flaws begin to show, but hell, even those don't manage to dampen the fun when you get realm duress at the most inopportune moment. :)

Indeed. I got CK as soon as it came out, and I've played it since. I've loved all PI games I've played (EU2, HOI I & II, Vicky, CK; alas, my computer can't run EUIII...) but I would have to say CK is my favorite. I find it immersive, and playing a dynasty as opposed to a realm is as you say original and refreshing.

Must admit i am on the other side of the fence. Just cannot get into CK at all.

Its strange, since i am a student of Medieval History, that the one game which focuses on this period is my least favourite PI game (cept for Vicky, never played that).

I think it is largely due to the overwhelming interface (or lack therof), and the huge learning curve. Everynow and then i get the inspiration to reinstall and have another go, and it always ends pretty quickly.

Is a shame really, its the only game i have ever seen which actually does a decent job of representing lord/vassal relationships and is a fairly accurate model of the limitations of regal authority in the period :(

Sorry to hear that you never got the game going ... I always thought CK was more "forgiving" with choices you made than EU or Vicky was. In those games, if you clicked the wrong button, you could risk ruining your country or worse.

You can still screw over your own realm in CK, but it usually takes more than a single click. Even if you accidentally click on an event that Excommunicates you, it is salvageble.

It is hard for me to see the interface as overwhelming, but then again I have been playing it since 2004, so I am so used to it now.

Maybe it is all the shields and no borders that are throwing you off? .. so it is hard to see what is what and who belongs to who. I never play the game in terrain mode. I always use Realm mode, so I can see where everything belongs.

No, i dont think that it is the map display exactly, it is not too difficult to follow who is whose vassal and so on.

There does, however, seem to be an obliqueness (for the want of a better word :p) to many of the game mechanics which i have never been able to get my head around and which have therefore reduced my enjoyment of the game. Reading through AAR's hasnt helped terribly in this respect either.

Its odd, i should love this game! Its like Rome in many ways, and i really enjoy that. But CK...dunno...maybe its the hard core historian in me getting all uptight about the ahistorical direction games ineviatably take.

Tis hard to explain. For someone who has invested time i can certainly see the benefits in the game, but for the outsider its a hard nut to crack. A lot like Hio2 in many ways, it looks terrible and incomprehensible to the unitiated, whilst to someone like me, its heaven! Im sure CK is like that, but its never sunk its claws into me.

We can always hope that a better interface on a future CK2 will help you get into this series ;)

CK is about the only game I've ever played where I've been desperate for a sequel.

I bought CK on release (and Deus Vult), and although I haven't been playing it lately I do often come back to the Paradox forum to see if there's an announcement that CK2 is on it's way.

The whole concept of the game is so superb and original it deserves to be improved upon and the fact that this forum is still active after what 6 years(?) is testimony to that.

Come on Paradox. There are plenty of eager CKers willing to offer ideas (I see the CK2 Wishlist thread is still going strong).
