How is Bernhard of Clairvaux going to be implemented in the game?

Maybe you could buy his services and then get some bonuses when you go for a crusade?

After all he did manage to get together the second crusade pretty well though it was not a success story in the end. Well in some way Bernhard must be given a leading role in the game. After all he is Mr Crusade:p

Maybe something like the leaders in HoI who have special abilities. In Bernhard's case it would probably be "Logistics Wizard" and "Rabid Crusader". :D

My guess would be that Bernard would show up as an event perhaps giving someone the chance to form the Templars. Or he could show up in several events (popes vs. anti-popes etc.) depending on some sort of trigger.:)

Hmm not every country should have such an event though. Could it be constructed like this using EU 2 terms.

Sire; Bernhard of Clairvaux, one of the founders of the Knights Templar has offered his services to us. He suggests that we shall liberate the Holy Land. What shall we say to him?

Yes it is the will of God. Let us purify the Holy Land of all infidels for the Glory of God. Put Bernhard on may payroll

+ xx manpower
+xx morale for five years
- xx stability
- xx gold

No he is too much of a troublemaker and scoundrel. I will have no part of a Holy war. Send him to the Pope instead.

+ xx stability
+xx gold

I don't imagine Bernhard to be someone that can be 'hired'. I guess an event BoC will come along when Berhard begins his preaching of the crusade, and you can choose between supporting the crusade (i.e., form an army and march) or staying at home (loss of prestige/piety). I think only French and HRE dynasties should get this event.

Sonny: Yes he should be involved in the creation of the Knights Templar, absolutely. After all he wrote the rules...

Sorcerer: Your idea is good and I agree that only France (Burgundy) and HRE should get the event

;)

The Bernard of Clairvaux event (assuming there is one) may not have to be confined to certain dynasties. It could be like the ToT or Martin Luther events in EU and for a basis for creating militant orders. (Yeah, I know the Templars and Hospitalers were alread formed but they were not really recognized until Bernard talked the Pope into giving them his blessing.):)

Yes they formed under Hugues de Payens in 1118 but they recivied official status and their rules first at the council of Troyes ten years later. At this meeting Bernhard had a decisive role;)

Maybie you could creat orders and gain X number of knights depending on how much piety you have.

Don’t know about that.

AFAIK it should only be possible to play a couple of defined orders (Templars, Hospitallers and so on) which mean that you are not allowed creating an order of your own. I would also assume that the orders either exists from the beginning or are formed from an event.;)

I didn't say that the crusading idea was restricted to France and the HRE, only that Bernhards influence was felt most in these two areas. He personally got Konrad to join the crusade, iirc. Of course anyone should be able to join if he wants to, but I think there should be some penalties for the French and HRE dynasties if they choose not to participate.

Fair comment - but I would argue other dynasties ought to have more minor penalties for not supporting or encouraging the Crusade. French and HRE dynasties are in line, but then so would Stephen had been if he hadn't lost Normandy to the Angevins by that point in time (or was in the process of losing it, can't remember precise chronology of the Anarchy).
