I have enjoyed my week of glory. I have also told chief Lars repeatedly that the award is not character of the week, it's character WRITER of the week and that it is not really about him. It's like talking to a wall. He tried to take over and type reasons why he is the best character ever, but since he is a figment of my imagination, I denied him the privilege, also pointing out that he doesn't know how to use a keyboard because the technology doesn't exist anymore in his timeline. He's pissed.

That's okay, though, because I not only get to pass off the award to a great writer but get to celebrate a character of hers that I really like. This Character Writer of the Week Award goes to @Cora Giantkiller for her Sword of Virtanen series. Although she is currently writing about Marja, a character who I thoroughly enjoy, the character I would like to highlight is one whose story arc has reached its end. Pihla is a favorite character of mine. She's wicked funny (sometimes without trying to be), stubborn as Hell, obsessed with birds, and autistic. She reminds me of some of my most delightfully quirky students on the spectrum and got me thinking a lot about what it must have been like in the Middle Ages to be autistic. I had never considered the issue before, but I bet it was very hard unless you were surrounded by truly loving and accepting people. If you haven't already, check out The Sword of Virtanen and enjoy Pihla in chapter two and her cameo in chapter three.

Congrats, @Cora Giantkiller. Phila is another wonderful character.

What a great writeup, Sirdramaticus!

Congrats, Cora! I too love your characters!

Thanks for the shout out! Pihla exists 100% because I was standing at the bus stop one day, thinking that I need an idea for Zygmunt's wife; and then decided that I should try writing an autistic character (as I am autistic myself). She surprised me a number of times and I had a lot of fun writing her. I'm glad that she's getting all this attention, although I doubt that she would enjoy attention all that much. I imagine her nodding awkwardly, giving a kind of crooked half-smile because she feels like she ought to, and then plotting her escape to a quiet room, hopefully with some books.

That’s why you get the award, not her. I’m trying to imagine Lars and Pihla in a conversation about this award. I cannot imagine a pair of people forced into conversation who would be more frustrated with each other.

Thanks again, everybody! I've been thinking who I want to pass this along to, now that it's been a week. I realized that it kinda has to be Duke Robert de Hauteville of Apulia, brought to life in @Nikolai's The Road to Epirus: A Hauteville Diary. Nikolai conveys a lot of the man's personality (at least this version of him) with a few terse words.
