If I go down to the one step above the lowest echelon of nobles, say a count with two maybe three counties. who has the potential throuhg some luck and a strategic combination of war and intiimidation to rise up to be a Duke, maybe even a King: who would it be 1066 scanario?

I played a game as Dauphine Viennois(AAR game) . This was my first game as a Count but by the end of my first reign I was King of Burgundy. They have one prov but it is very wealthy (equivilent in income to 2 or 3 normal provs). Being in HRE which usually explodes early on also helps.

As a Count is seems you should just bide your time and wait until you get a chance to do something. If Your liege is in trouble DoW and take a prov or 2. When your first liege dies ALWAYS break free.

At the moment I'm playing as Count of Tver (Russian Count). In my first reign (around 20 years) I took nothing but within 3 years of my 2nd I ruled 5 provs (including Novgorod) and was a Prince. Simply put just take the chances when they come. When there isn't a chance don't try and make one.

One of the northern irish counts. They are close to the open Ducal title of Ulster, and from there it is just a matter of subjegating the other Dukes (who have a nasty habit of allying with powerful english lords).

Count of Sjælland (Hvide dynasty) ... almost immediately the King will grant you the Ducal title, so that is kind of a freebie, and you have the Kingdom's most wealthy province, and nearby pagans to beat up on.

Count of Lübeck. Suicidal, unless you immediately pledge to Denmark or Germany. Much bigger Mecklemburg is a rival and will declare war unless you are part of another realm. If you pledge to Denmark, you'll get the Holstein ducal title for free.

Count of Rhodes. Small ducal title available, if you just take out Samos (I think it is). Then as the empire crumbles, you can expand onto the mainland, and eventually become emperor.

For a challenge, start at the count of Turnovo and become king of Bulgaria and escape byzantine lordship.

In the DVIP Wales mode, the Count of Morgannwg of the Morgan dynasty could take the county of Gwent and then the county of Brycheiniog, two of the three would create the Duke of Morgannwg title.

You would need the DVIP Wales mode or TASS mod however, as Brychieniog is not represented in the standard map, nor can Morgannwg (it means Morgan's Country in Welsh) be formed in the standard map. Its challenging because you have to contend with the ascendent Mathrafal clan in mid and North Wales, and rivals the Dinefwr Princes of Deheubarth to your west. Also, the Normans in England are ready to pounce on the Welsh.

Are you game enough to prevent their invasions?

Slavic counts of Lübeck are extremely enjoyable county to play as. I also find Moscow fun, because at the start of the CK's timeperiod it was just an obscure small town in the backwaters of Kievan Rus and not the great principality it became later. Scandinavian and Celtic counts are also enjoyable, although not very challenging. (I have done world conquest as count of Kalmar län back in the 1.05. I have considered doing it again in DV with even poorer count, but I haven't bothered because WC isn't most enjoyable thing you can do in CK.)

Besides those, I could also recommend Byzantine counts in the Middle East or Asia Minor. It's nice to see if you can remain Byzantine or if it's better to pledge allegiance to the sultan.

Wow lots of ideas! Thanks guys :)

The county of Fareyear is fun, you poor and isolated but with luck you can come a long way (goes for all counties actuall).

A relatively easy counts is the count of Upper-, Lower-Silesia and Opople, though you will receive the duke-title of Silesia within a few days.

Salerno and Naples are also two intereting ones.
