I have EU4, CK2, Vicky2 and HoI2. I have dabbled in all four but never in depth because I just don't have the time to learn 4 new systems. I am off this summer and want to learn one title in depth. Background: I am a history teacher and have no special affinity for either period. I like all equally. So, if you could only play one for maximum bang for the buck in terms of time investment, which one would it be?

crusader kings 2. it progresses much slower than slower that the others (feels as slow as hoi at times), completely unique (non-specific) features like dynamic tags that don't look like any other games will have them. and the mods. oh god, the mods. just when i thought i couldn't be a bigger fan of the elder scrolls and game of thrones. there's just much more room for non-standard gameplay.

Victoria 2 and it's not even close. Of the "grand strategy" games it is the only one to come close to that title and is by far the best at modeling its time period (which means it has the most interesting elements to its gameplay). It's also the only one that gives you interesting stuff to do that doesn't involve invading others, and is the only one to give you a particular reason to prefer one territory over another for when you are going out conquering.

It's just the most fun game to play, because it has the most interesting gameplay.

Victoria 2 with HoD.

Possibly the best grand strategy game made to date.

Vic2 here aswell.

Though the one thing all Paradox games are lacking is some kind of mechanicsm for Randomized maps/scenarios.

HOI3 was only interesting past the first 2-3 games with the randomized countries mod.

I dont like EU4 to much because of the excess of events that 'guide' you, though the randomized new world is nice.

Vic2 connects you with the pop's and actually gives you a pretty good economy system - It's what makes the game great. I just hope Vic3 will have a randomize feature.

Victoria 2 for me. I find it the best overall game in some ways, although Crusader Kings 2 is probably my #2 choice.

It is by far the best one when it comes to really depicting its time period and it is so much more rewarding to bring a country to greatness in that game than any other.
As broke as I am if a Victoria 3 were to come out tomorrow I would actually go so far as to sell some of my stuff to buy it. I've never even done that to pay bills before.

Victoria 2.

Most definitly Vicky 2. I mean, i love EUIV and CKII too, but Vicky is simply better. It has more depth, more immersion, and has made me interested in a time i had not really much of a clue before i started with Vicky.

Victoria 2 with Pops of Darkness mod.

Eu4

Victoria II. Simply the best of all Paradox games due to the fact that you could become a power without blobbing all over the map.

I hope Paradox looks at this thread when deciding the next game they should make...

Crusader Kings 2. I don't like determinism, and IMHO EU4 went the wrong way from EU3. I also like Victoria 2 but I feel CK2 is the game that has the most flexibility, plus the best mods (I'm looking at you Game of Thrones) are for CK2 :)

Crusader Kings 2 is unparalleled in the amount of things you can influence. Victoria 2 is a close second but the continuous event spam (especially during elections and playing the USA) and relative lack of ways to influence your nation make it a worse game than CK2.

I have a lot of difficult picking between Victoria 2 and Crusader Kings 2. I think in terms purely of the base game, Victoria 2 is probably better, but CK2's modding scene is a lot stronger and offers endless replayability.

It's definitely not EU4, though, which is annoying because EU4 covers the timeframe I'm most interested in.
