I have mostly played Paradox games on a 15 inch laptop screen, but I am curious how large of a monitor people have comfortably used to play Paradox games. I am considering getting a 27 or 28 inch 4k monitor and wanted to find out whether that would be too big for GSGs and other Paradox games.
To some degree that depends on which game(s) you refer to. Older ones, say Stellaris and before, only had up to 1920x1080 when released , which may not look great on a bigger monitor. They have had higher resolutions added later, with varying degrees of success
Very recent ones should be fine on a larger monitor, depending on your other video hardware.
Also depends how far away you put your monitor. Bigger isn't always better also. You may find yourself having to turn your head and eyes too much if you go too big. I think you can look up screen size recommendations for how far away you have your screens online. That'll give you a rough guide which you can tweak to your own preference.
Stellaris works ok on 27" and 1440p and there are mods to make the UI better, too. HoI4 is terrible too small text and everything is blurry, or bit larger text and even blurrier. I tried recently to play HoI4 and found it unplayable. Thankfully I had gottoen HoI4 for free so I wasn't too annoyed...
2560x1440 is the best resolution for Paradox games.
It's large but not too large that the UI is stretched or that you need excessive mouse movement to do anything, and it's not too small that it restricts what you can see.
It's also the common resolution for 27" monitors which is a very competitive segment. Dell have a range of very good monitors.
The G2724D is very cheap as an entry-level screen that will be good unless you're a high end FPS gamer. Alienware AW27224DM is the mid-range model and AW2725DF the higher end.
You could also get an ultrawide or proper 4k and then play in window mode. Samsung Odyssey OLED G8/G85SB, Dell AW3423DWF & AW3225QF, MSI MEG 342C.
Tried it on a 27", but then the texts become too small for me to read them.
As far as pixel sizes go: a 1980x1024 full HD resolution on a 24" monitor has the same pixel size as 2560x1440 on a 32" monitor.
So, if you want to retain that same pixel size while playing on a 4K resolution, you would need to have a 48" monitor. (4K is two times full HD horizontal, and two times full HD vertical, making the diagonal 2 times as big as well).
