I'm not so sure about that....

The crusades may have been a little helpful in the beginning, but once the 4th crusade came around, that did way more harm than the previous three did good. In fact, if the empire had remained in it's pre-1204 state, it may have been able to take advantage of the collapse of the Rum Seljuks and regain parts of Anatolia.

Well actually the muslims fought each other more than they fought the crusaders, IIRC. If the muslims would have united against the crusaders, the crusaders wouldn't have time to pray Pater Noster before getting shish kebabed!

Could say the same for the Europeans though too. As soon as Nur-a-din consolodated a little power in the area the writing was on the wall.

That's why I deliberately mentioned 100 years, from Cluny until just before the idea of "hey, the Venetians will help us" sprang into the minds of a few nobles looking for a fun time in Outremer

The Venetians were helping before this too, you know. It wasn't their fault those crusaders in 1203 didn't know how to count... ;)
