If they are really trying to break into the science fiction genre, they'd probably try to get as much accurate as possible. They've probably done their homework or even hired someone to give them a quick lesson on astronomy and galactic structure.

From a business and quality assurance perspective, it makes sense. If you want to break into this genre, hit the ground running by getting every little detail accurate and, therefore, dazzle your buyers.

Plus, with a maximum of a thousand stars per game, they probably want to make the galaxy as varied and interesting as possible. Something like star types is a small but effective way to make that happen.
