I also get the following error when starting the game from the launcher. To get the game to load in the first place I have to run the ck2.exe directly.

See the end of this message for details on invoking
just-in-time (JIT) debugging instead of this dialog box.

************** JIT Debugging **************
To enable just-in-time (JIT) debugging, the .config file for this
application or computer (machine.config) must have the
jitDebugging value set in the system.windows.forms section.
The application must also be compiled with debugging
enabled.

For example:

<configuration>
<system.windows.forms jitDebugging="true" />
</configuration>

When JIT debugging is enabled, any unhandled exception
will be sent to the JIT debugger registered on the computer
rather than be handled by this dialog box.

Just upgraded to the latest version of the nvidia video drivers (301.42) but the issue persists.

But the CD and Steam versions of 1.05g ought to be identical. Perhaps you have a faulty CD?

The Launcher problem is likely a .NET issue, visit the Windows Update site and apply all updates for .NET that it finds there.

ETA: those errors on the CD version's error.log are very ominous, haven't seen them before.
[gfx_dx9.cpp:1197]: D3DXCreateEffectFromFile failed with error: error X3539: ps_1_x is no longer supported; use /Gec in fxc to automatically upgrade to ps_2_0
error X3539: Alternately, fxc's /LD option allows use of the old compiler DLL

Thing is the Steam install runs the launcher which works without issue. These are both on the same PC with no changes to patches or drivers.

Well, I really have no idea. As I said they ought to be absolutely identical, code-wise, and we've had no reports from any other customer to the contrary. So all I can think of is your CD is faulty.

Can I ask, how is it you have access to both a CD and downloaded version?

I bought the steam version (and have registered it on the forum so as you can see I have a valid license) but I heard that steam versions of paradox games had patching issues (particularly with EU3) so I borrowed the CD from a friend and went to install that. When that install failed to run I installed my steam version which worked. Maybe there is an issue with the media, no idea. Doesn't bother me too much given the steam version works and seems to have up to date patching but hopefully my error logs are helpful if others have these issues in future.

But the CD just installs the Steam version ... ! The only way to get a non-Steam version is to buy the GamersGate version. Either your friend's CD is bad or is a pirated copy.

The so-called patching problems with EU3 were just that applying a BETA patch to the Steam installation doesn't work, as Steam just overwrites the files back to the non-beta code. Just goes to show you should check, and not rely on things you've "heard" somewhere!
