The world in 1936

Europe

Europe.png

The Great War has shattered Europe. The Allies stood triumphant over Germany and her allies.
In the chaos following the collapse of the Austro-Hungarian empire, the Balkans changed drastically. Hungary invaded a internally divided Romania. Czechoslovakia collapsed and lost territory to Hungary and Austria, where Otto von Habsburg had seized power and installed an Austrian Empire once more.

In the meanwhile, the Russian civil war raged on and the Bolsheviks finally signed peace with the Whites and the Poles in 1926, losing territory to various white republics.

In 1929, the Wall Street stock market crash hit the world. The already fragile economy of the Weimar Republic collapsed and unemployed roamed the streets. Adolf Hitler staged a coup, but the coup was crushed and Hitler assassinated as a terrorist. In 1930, Oskar Von Hindenburg proclaimed "Das Deutsche Reich", which was not recognized by the Weimar Government: The German Civil War had started. While the Weimar forces where struggling to put the fascists back in their place, the communists seized the opportunity and proclaimed the "Volksrepublik Deutschland".

Germany was not the only country to be hit by the Stock Market crash. The economic crisis hit France too. Pétain seized this opportunity and established a fascist dictatorship in France. In order to secure French wealth, he established a puppet regime in the occupied Rheinland.

Italy was hit by the Stock Market crash too. Socialists and communists gained more and more popularity and finally, the king was forced to abdicate and Italy become a communist republic. When Yugoslavia fell into civil war in the early 30's, Italy supported the Croatians, which then managed to establish a socialist Croatia.

Near East

NearAsia.png

The peace treaty ending the Russian civil war included the creation of various states. In the near east, this led to the creation of the Khazak, Khiva and Bukhara Khanates.

The government of the Bukharan Khanate was very unstable though, and in 1927 the government was overthrown and with Russian help, the Bukharan People's Republic was established.

The 1929 Stock Market Crash had effects on the Near East too, as the British Empire was hit by the Crash. Various Indian factions exploited this weakness and started a full-scale rebellion, which eventually led to the creation of the Union of Delhi and the independent countries Hyderabad, Mysore, Gujarat, Burma and Ceylon.

Far East

fareast.png

FER and Siberia
The weakness of the Red Army, combined with the death of Grigory Seymonov on one of his raids on the Trans-Siberian Railway, insured that the White Movement got enough supplies to continue resisting the Soviet Union. However, the various socialists in the Russian Far East threatened this position, and only by the creation of the buffer state of the Far Eastern Republic could the White Movement continue. Kolchak proclaimed the Republic of Siberia, and began industrializing in hope to fight against the Bolsheviks once more. Meanwhile, Roman Ungern von Sternberg, who had seized power in Mongolia back in 1920, continued on with his pursuit of pan-monarchist goals.

Indochina fractured
The success of the Indian rebel nations was the beginning of a small gulf of nationalism across East Asia. French Indochina rose up in revolt in 1930, as the success of the Yen Bai Mutiny spread across the Union. Vietnam gained independence while Siam regained their empire in Cambodia.

Trouble in Japan
Meanwhile in Japan, the Empire had not been able to overcome the hard times of the Great Depression. The assassination of Takahashi Korekiyo by a radical military officer for his fiscal policies involving reduction of military expenditures, prolonged the recovery of the economy. This resulted in a polarization of the ideologies in Japan, with a growth in the communist movement.

The Manchurian Incident seemed to be the end of the tunnel for Japan, as the Kwantung Army began their invasion of Manchuria. However, they miscalculated a factor that turned what could have been a clean conquest into a nightmare: the Korean Rebellion. The various guerilla forces in southeastern Manchuria knew that it was only a matter of time before the Japanese conquest of Manchuria will threaten their position, so they decided to do a daring invasion of their homeland. When the Chosen Army of Japan sent half of their forces into Manchuria to help the Kwantung Army, the Korean forces struck. They managed to take over Northeastern Korea, sparking a massive rebellion centering on Prince Imperial Ui.

The Ascending Phoenix: the Korean Empire
The Korean Rebellion was the turning point for the Japanese Empire on the Mainland. As Japan was forced to commit more troops into Korea and Manchuria to hold the line, more and more Japanese lost their faith in the government, leading to demonstrations and desertion. Internal disorder hit Japan as many of the poorer in society were increasingly left behind in Japan’s futile wars, and the disability to contain the revolutionary forces rising up lead to a communist revolution hitting parts of the army.

The attempted communist revolution brought Japan to the breaking point, and so Japan made a deal with the Koreans: The Korean Empire will be revived. Prince Imperial Ui accept the proposal, and so the Korean Empire was reborn.

The Korean Empire, enjoying its new freedom, moved to annex parts of Gando, where a Korean majority had been established due to Japanese rule. With the investments of the Japanese Zaibatsues, who did not want to risk their money on the rebellious Japanese workers, Korea continued on with its industrialization which started during the Japanese occupation. Although it is not the world power like Japan, it has certainly gained a place in the international community as a modern constitutional monarchy. It now works to "regain" territory that was disputed in 1712 with the former Qing Dynasty.

The Two Suns: Imperial and Communist Japan
Initially the earnest junior officers believed that the Emperor did not know what was going on and hoped to open his eyes. But the Imperial court was too conservative and the revolution quickly radicalized into a full-blown revolution. Although the peace with Korea helped the conservatives, the communists succeeded in taking over the government, when the Tokyo Fleet joined the revolution. This was the founding of the People’s Republic of Japan.

Meanwhile, the Emperor barely escaped, the Imperial Guard having sacrificed themselves to move him out of the city. The Loyalists, reinforced by the Kwantung Army from the mainland, kept a hold on western Japan and the Pacific Islands, and made their capital at Hiroshima. For the second time in their history, the Japanese were split into two countries.

Fractured China
In the 20's China was plunged into civil war, as various warlords (Kuomintang, Anhui, Yunnan, Guominjun and more) fought for control. Although the Kuomintang consolidated power with the Northern Expedition, the defeat in the Central Plains War both bankrupted the Kuomintang and ensured that the Warlords would continue to possess their power, with pro-monarchists managing to receive Japanese aid and set up Pu Yi as a figurehead of an Imperial China and the Soviet Republic of China obtaining a firm foothold in Southern China with help from PRJ.

Only one person had profit from the chaos in China. That person was no other than Roman Ungern von Sternberg, who had seized power in Mongolia back in 1920. While China was thrown into civil war, he had seized the opportunity to absorb large portions of the territories owned by the warlords.

Umm, sorry, but what Czechoslovakia are you taling about? For it to collapse, it would first have to exsist, and it looks more like A-H collapsed into Hungary and Austria.

Btw, Romania had no territories in Transsylvania prior to 1920, so there is nothing to take for Hungary.

I believe that the invasions and ethnic splits he is talking about happened after the treaties of St. Germain and Trianon.

Looks decent should have potential, although it's similar to several mods out there in development now. I am wondering why there is a Free City of Danzig, but the right-wing German state has much of the lands promised to Poland. I'm sure there's a backstory, I'm just curious! :) Is it going to be likely that France declares war on the Völkerrepublik if that Saar state is under French influence? What is the Saarland flag, is it this?

So do I. No Greater Polish uprising I presume, but that would mean Poland for some reason didn't attack to take Poznan, Bydgoszcz and Danzig back - I guess that might be the reason for a new war ?

They did :D

And about Poland: There were the plebiscites and in this timeline, the area around Poznan voted to remain German ;)

Danzig is a freestate controlled by the League of Nations.

Ostheim, you were almost right about the Rheinland state :D. Pétain releases plans for the incorporation of all French speaking territories into France in the mod. This plan also includes the annexation of the Rheinland. The Völkerrepublik (which will have won the civil war by then) will object to this, resulting in a French-German war. ;)

What is the fate of Mussolini in this timeline?

In this timeline, Mussolini is the leader of an exiled Italian fascist party ;)

Also, I edited the "information post" with some info on the near east ;)

Interesting ideas. But I have some suggestions:

First of all, the german word for people's republic is Volksrepublik.

Second, I would suggest to move the capital of the german Reich from silesia to eastern prussia (Königsberg). Since the german Reich seems to continue the tradition of prussian militarism and domestic dominence, the capital should be in prussia and Königsberg was on of the most important prussian cities. Also, there was never much love between silesia and prussia.

And for the last thing: I feel very unconfortable about bavaria being communist. That seems very unlikely to me. If you want to now about communist strongholds and voting in the Weimar Republic, I suggest This Side

Anyways, good luck with your mod!

OK, I'll change the name of Communist Germany ;)

The official capital of all three German factions is Berlin (remember, they are at war with each other). So if one of the countries captures Berlin, it's capital is immediately moved there ;)

And last: why shouldn't Bavaria be communist? In our timeline, the communist Kurt Eisner proclaimed an independent socialist Bavaria (1918-1919). More info here.

That is true, however,I think people there are mostly supporters of conservatives, and I also think that a lot of people there supported NSDAP (they tried the coup in Munich, and when they came to power, their rallies were held in Nurnberg.

In Bavaria, especially in the rural areas, the people are mostly catholic-conservative. The support for a socialist Bavaria was outside of Munich (which is way more liberal and leans towards social-democrats) quite low, what made it easy for the government in Berlin to crush it.

@Great Duck
Overall, the Catholics didn't support the NSDAP. Most voters and members of the NSDAP (at least until Hitler came to power) were Protestants. The Catholics voted most of the time for the Center Party (a catholic dominated conservative party)

Now, this wouldn't work unless you have a better explanation - 90 % majority with long standing distrust of anything german (forced germanisation), strong nationalistic party (Dmowski's eNDecja was particularily strong in Poznan and Silesia) and well organised para military structures.
All in all they would have to go insane to vote in such a way it happened in Mazuria/southern Easten Prussia.

Perhaps I am too serious with a mod which after all might be completely ahistorical, but whenever I read or design alternative options they are supposed to be real and that it is not real.

1) victory in a voting was impossible - there was no large area with German majority, except a few 'islands' here and there,

2) if a forgery happened it would end in a massive ethnical conflict which would be lost by this Germany,

The only realistic option is that Germany were too strong and no uprising happened and no voting took place - this would also mean that Upper Silesia remained in Germany.

So no plebiscites at all if you want to sound serious and territorial claims on Germany which would wait any sign of weakness.

So if I get it right, Romania got Transsylvania in 1920, then Hungary got it back, as it did with the Felvidék (Slovakia)?

And what is up with Yugoslavia? I suppose a splintered slavic balkans could not resist a resurgent Hungary. Or am I spoiling the event list?:p

What is the political setup of Hungary? Horty-Teleki, Horthy-Bethlen, or what? I suppose the Whites won in this timeline also. If yes, are the surrounding countires Red or White?

And what are the hungarian cores?
