Blinking graphics in XP with mouse movement

Hey, I'm hooked on EU3 and thought I'd get the original EU1 since it was so cheap, and as I can't run EU3 on my laptop when I'm on the road.

I just booted it up, but there is a terrible graphics bug anytime I move the mouse the screen flashes/blinks. It's pretty unbearable and gives me a headache after a minute.

I've tried all compatibility modes (Windows 95/98, 256 colors, 640x580, and disable visual themes), but to no avail.

Does anyone have any experience of this problem, and hopefully a solution too?

It is usually caused by something running in the backgroud - a virus scanner or something. Musicmatch is a well known culprit. Try shutting everything down in the system tray one by one until it stops.

Almost definetly something running in the background. Although, I had a similar problem a while back that seemed to happen whenever I entered or exited the multi player menu, could be that.

Another possible cause is if you Alt+Tab a lot in and out of the game it can do that too.

I had about 20+ icons running in my taskbar, so it was a good bet. I killed them all, but I still had to fire up the task manager and kill any non-essential processes I could find before it worked. Would really like to know the culrpit(s), but it might take hours to track it down. Maybe I'll just try booting in safe mode when I want to play EU.
