Blinking screen

Hi.
I have weird problem when playing EU2 and other Paradox games (checked with CK, Vicky and HoI2) - the whole screen blinks every few seconds (changes to black and then returns to normal). It doesn't happen all the time, but very often recently (since a week now). I have Radeon 9200 SE with refreshing rate set at 75 Hz.

Help, anyone?

Daniel A had the same problem in some thread but in his case restart of the computer made an effect. As far as EU2, CK and Vicky are concerned it works for me too, but HoI2 blinks all the time. I tried removing all things that 'blink' in background (like animated systray icons) but it didn't help.

I have the same problem. Seems to increase when I run backgorund applications especially windows file search. Usually an alt-tab and back into the game solve it. It does about the same in all paradox game very annoying and I have a 9200 pro...

Music match processes running will cause it, that is the latest thing.

90% of the time is is a process running that is the culprit., something accessing the internet usually.

Use of the ALT-TAB has also been the cause.

You're right, killing all proccesses helps, however I suspected something like 'change AVI to AVI_back' Do you know if it only is the case in Radeon 9200 (as Dalosein has the same problem) or it is common?

I suspect somethings would trigger it no matter what video card you had while other things will triger it depending on which you have, so you might be fine with something running that another has a problem with and that person may be able to run what gives you trouble.
Then there is the driver version you are using and the refresh rate, adjusting that can sometimes solve the problem as well.

Basically it is has problem with windows xp "popup" behavior. When a program starts or update it is given focus. But others games, not from paradox, doesn't do this. I'm no programmer and I don't know how to fix it but I suppose it have to do with the "friendliness" of paradox game to alt-tabbing...

Paradox games like a lot of other games do not support ALT-Tabing.

I have the same problem it affects all Paradox games and Dungeon Siege no other applications and games are affected.

You are a little unclear are you talking about altabbing or does your screen flicker and you are looking for help to stop it?

I frequently get some flickering in the top 60% of the screen when EU2 is loading a scenario, but then it goes away so I assume it's related to my video card. As long as it doesn't happen in the game I can't complain.

Screen flicker is the issue
I have solved it, based on this thread. Disabling the broadband connection while playing solves the problem. I have just rechecked it ending the MIM process and that cures it with out disabling broadband. Thx this has been annoying me for weeks.

One thing that works for me is to alt-tab out of the game, ctrl-alt-del to get the task manager, click on processes, right click on "EU2.exe" go to "Set Priority" and set it to "realtime." Unfortunately I have to do that every time I start the game otherwise it flickers nonstop.

You just need to find out what is running in the background that is causing the flicker.
Music match is one that will always cause a problem, the new trillian version, virus protection ...

My two cents :
AFAIK, in Windows XP, blinking always happens with open file search window (and the little dog - by default - assistant) even if this window is reduced in the tasks bar.
