Matti was outside the barracks when he heard the sirens. The loud noise was familiar, they had trained many times how to best defend themselves in case of a bombard from the air. But this time it was special, this time it was not a exercise. He could hear the great noise from the planes motors.
The sky lightened up like a match when the anti-aircraft guns opened fire. Above him there were 100 of them, small like birds in the sky but he knew the real size of those monsters.
"The Russians have attacked us!" screamed somebody.
Matti rushed towards the underground shelter but just as he should open the door he could feel the first detonations. He jumped down in the overcrowded basement. It smelled like a toilet, as a baby diaper thought Manni.
"Listen to me boys!" shouted the camp commander.
"It seems that the Russians have attacked us but we are prepared. The latest reports indicates only smaller border incidents and enemy plane over our airspace. I have got orders that the division shall move towards Viipuri and start digging. After the bombard you shall go and take your stuff, we are leaving this hole in hour!"
The last bomb detonated and a strange silence fell. Then scream of wounded men could be heard outside the basement.
"Let's go boys!"
Matti was the second person to jump out from the basement. Some medics ran around but he could only hear the screams. Then somebody grabbed his arm, Matti looked backwards. It was Raino.
"Come we must go and bring our squad. I will go and search for Yrjö and Pekka."
"Perkele, those Russians will kill us. We can't stand against them."
"I will go and pack first before any new attacks so I'm ready next time to leave."
"Alright but hurry, we are leaving in 1 hour."
One of the barracks had got direct hit in the roof and exploded. Some soldiers managed to kill the fire.
He wondered what his parents was thinking right now. They surely had got the news.
He ran towards his own barrack and a tear fell down towards his cheek.
