Hmm... I think something may have gone wrong while running the EU2 uninstall program. It seemed to run fine -- I was trying to uninstall and then reinstall the program. Anyway, running install, I get an error message -- TUR A-WALK...bmp is already in use (I've shortened the file name). I went looking, and the BMP folder is still there, a subfolder of UNITS. When I try to delete the folder manually, I get the error message "folder is not empty", even though it appears to be. I'm running XP, btw. Anyone have any suggestions on how I get rid of the bmp folder, so that I can reinstall?

Thanks in advance.

try this to uninstall the game:
http://www.europa-universalis.com/forum/showthread.php?s=&threadid=20775

then, if it won't let you delete the directory, make sure that you can see all files in windows explorer (tools, folder options, view, "show hidden files and folders").

If you see something after that, delete it. If you don't boot in Safe Mode (Press F5 when starting Windows) and try to delete it, it should work.

If it still won't work that way, create a boot disk, boot in DOS (the C:\>) and type the following:
DELTREE C:\PROGRA~1\PARADO~1

this should take care of it.

Argh...at times like this, I'd go back to Win98 in an instant.

Thanks for the suggestions, but I'm still stuck. I should have mentioned that the folder seems empty, even with hidden files viewable. Tried safe mode, but it still won't delete. The DOS suggestion is good; in '98 I suspect it would work like a charm, but the DOS embedded in XP doesn't want to recognize the DELTREE command. Anyone know if there's a functional equivalent in XP's DOS?

I haven't tried the regedit suggestions in the link you pointed me towards, but the problems I'm having aren't with an installshield recognizing a key in the registry, so that shouldn't matter, should it?

It's all very mysterious. Have others had similar problems with EU2's Uninstall? I've tried doing a couple of searches, but I don't see anything.

yes, I agree :D

Rmdir /s

a good tip it to look for help in the help file ;) that's where I managed to learn a few things about that beast; I still ain't used to it :D

it could have been a key loading a fille that stays in memory thus forbiding you to delete the file/directory whatever is left.

The search option doesn't work properly at the moment, but I'm here since EU2 hit retail and I have yet to see a problem like yours. Of course, there could have been people with the same problem who didn't reported it.

It happenned to me with other software, but I never really had problems with EU/EU2.

Thanks for your patience, Viper37, and thanks for the rmdir tip (what a handy helpfile that is... :) )...unfortunately, DOS is also balking at deleting a folder that's not empty, though as far as I can see, there are no files, hidden files, or even protected system files anywhere in the vicinity. Checked the registry as well, no problems there (uninstall seems to have worked, at least that far).

I must be missing something obvious. I'm going to sleep on it for a day or two and look again, when I'm not annoyed. Whether or not I play EU2 again, I refuse to be mocked by an immortal folder cluttering up my harddrive...

Maybe if I hold a powerful magnet up to the harddrive, just so, I can zap the map\unit\bmp subdirectory but nothing else...:)

OK, in the light of a new day, I still haven't figured out what's going on, but there's a workaround -- renaming the offending folder so that the new installation doesn't stumble upon it.

Problem solved, though I'd still love to get rid of that stubborn bmp folder :).

I've never tried but when you use a bootdisk in XP, do you get in "real-dos" or can you only use the command prompt?

Let's say you try a boot disk from another OS (winMe or 98) and make sure you have deltree.exe on it, can you delete the folders?

Did you try to delete them one by one (meaning, first delete bmp, then go up one more level).

It is strange... no files in there, regular name with no accents...

in Windows Explorer, if you change the attributes for the entire folder to archive only, does it let you delete it now?
