Bought EU IV on Steam. Can't download activation key, can't connect to server

Hi all,

I just bought EU IV with the available DLC's on steam for 55 euro's and can't play it.
Every time I try to start the game I get a pop-up screen saying that the activation key is being applied for. Then after half a second (just enough time to make a screenshot of it) this screen disappears and a screen pops up saying can't connectto the main server (see attachment).

How can I fix this problem?


PS, I tried submitting this question in the EU IV tech support forum, but since I don't have a code the forum says I don't have access there.

While Steam resolve the key problem, you can run the game itself just fine by going to the Steam EU4 directory and running eu4_launch.exe .

Thanks AndrewT. That indeed works.
The only downside is the DLC I bought seems to be inactive that way. This way the added events in the DLC of course won't start taking place when playing a campaign until the DLC is activated.

Edit: Wait, if steam is running the DLC is active. So it works if you:
-Start Steam
-Start the game at .../Steam/steamapps/common/Europa Universalis IV subfolder
-Run eu4_launch.exe (NOT eu4.exe!)

Just noticed the following problem when playing the game like this:
If you load an unedited savegame which you saved yourself it says: Savegame belongs to another user or is edited. Achievements will be disabled.
So for those playing a campaign to among others get a specific achievement before the game is fixed: You're sadly wasting your time.

This message is normal (if poorly worded), and just means that game is not eligible for achievements - for that it must be started in Ironman mode and at 11/11/1444 (Rise of teh Ottomans).
