All I get is the red triangle - have tons of other steam games installed - first time a steam game has failed right out of the box.

I've seen the standard tech support reply so here are my answers :

I turned off the firewall and windows defender completely.

All the MS files shown below.

DXDiag says directX 11 has no problems.

I have windows 7 pro GTX 750ti 8 gb i7 processor 14 gb hdd space on C where the paradox folder is.

There is no log folder in /documents/paradox

There is a pdx_settings file - it says :

"Graphics"={
"display_mode"={
version=0
value="borderless_fullscreen"
}
"display_index"={
version=0
value="0"
}
"vsync"={
version=0
enabled=yes
}
"fullscreen_resolution"={
version=0
value="1600x900"
}
"windowed_resolution"={
version=0
value="1440x900"
}
}
"System"={
"language"={
version=0
value="l_english"
}
}

Also every time I start the game it says it is installing 1 of 1 then the Stellaris start screen shows - click on the Play button then the red triangle shows. Also the only play option is Cross Store Multiplayer. I dont really want to play this online - just offline by myself. Internet is working fine - but only at about 4mbs max if that matters - no problem getting to this forum obviously.

Please go here:
And run the x86 and x64 installers there.

IF that doesn't help, also Install ALL these Microsoft modules:

(run dxsetup.exe after extracting from this download)

Add stellaris.exe to the exceptions list of your antivirus app; ESPECIALLY if you have Windows Defender, add it to the Ransomware "Apps Allowed Through" list.

Also if you have FRAPS or the MSI Gaming App or Rivatuner installed, disable it as it clashes with this game.

If that doesn't help:
DXDIAG is a program you run from the Windows search box on the task bar. After running it will open a window and start collecting info with a progress bar in the lower-left corner. When it completes click the 'save all information' button and save it to a file then attach that file here.

Dude - did you even read my post ?

I covered this already.

I might have figured it out anyways - for the sake of anyone coming after me : I somehow got the launcher to show me an ACTUAL error message - I think I found a launcher (?) exe and tried to run it as an admin and got :

d3dcompiler_47.dll missing

google it and there was a MS update in 2017 that had this - you can get it here :
I cant post a link here but its KB4019990 or google the above and you'll get there.

I installed the update and restarted the launcher and it popped up and this time showed an INSTALL button instead of PLAY - clicked that and now its about 5 hours later and 8 GB of more downloads and the the install is still progressing (knock on wood).

If I don't come back with more info - it worked and this fixed the issue.

I won't add a note about what I think should be done to programmers that write programs that don't have actual error messages and think a cute red triangle is enough info for debugging.

That DLL would have been supplied by my DirectX 9 install link above!
