In the reports of problems with EU, I note
that people are posting their hardware configurations
and base OS, which is good, but in looking at
the reported bugs, and particularly in the
completely different levels of stability reported
by people with roughly equivalent platforms,
it occurs to me (as a software professional,
albiet not in the games sector), that there
must be one or more factors that are not being
covered in these reports.
The whole Microsoft system architecture of
independently upgradable middleware components,
with half-assed synchronization through the
accursed registry, is an open invitation to
these sorts of problems. Whenever I see reports
of problems that arise only when there are other
programs active, for example, that rings an
alarm bell about false assumptions about various
DLLs. So, to the fine folks at Paradox, I would
ask: What Windows services does EU use, and what
versions and, very importantly, *combinations* of
versions are supported/tested?
I particularly wonder about the version of DirectX
assumed/required. But would it be possible to get
a list of what other packages/API's are used?
I have an untuitive sense that, for example, people
may be upgrading DirectX without also upgrading
some other package or re-applying some service pack,
resulting in an unstable and untested configuration.
Balzingo!
